Long-term Manchester United target Joao Felix has reportedly been placed on the transfer list by Atletico Madrid.

Erik ten Hag has made steady progress at Man Utd so far, but he will be keen to solve their current striker conundrum. Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to leave, while Anthony Martial has struggled to stay fit.

In the Premier League this season, United have averaged 1.4 goals per game. Having scored just 17 league goals this season, Ten Hag’s side rank 10th in the league for goals scored.

Marcus Rashford has been their most prolific player up until this point with four goals. His thumping header against West Ham was his 100th strike for the Red Devils.

Ten Hag wants to play quick dynamic football and so it is crucial that United sign a forward with the correct profile. As the Ronaldo saga rumbled on throughout the summer, they ultimately failed to land a striker during Ten Hag’s first window.

More funds are expected to be afforded to rebuild the squad in January and the next summer window. Given United’s long-standing interest in Felix, the stars could have aligned for this move.

Joao Felix to Man Utd makes sense

It’s no secret that Felix has struggled to live up to his £113million price tag since arriving in Madrid.

The Portuguese forward joined Atletico Madrid in the summer of 2019 for a club-record fee.

The 22-year-old has showcased flashes of brilliance, but he has not managed to produce them on a consistent basis.

Across his 127 appearances for the club, he has scored a total of 31 goals, with 23 of those coming in La Liga.

According to a report from Cadena Ser, Felix has been transfer listed by Atletico, along with three other players. The other players in question are Rodrigo De Paul, Thomas Lemar and Yannick Carrasco.

The report explains that Atletico Madrid need to sell some of their prized assets in order to strengthen in January and balance the books following their European exit.

Diego Simeone’s future has recently been cast into doubt as it seems like an overhaul could be on the cards for Atletico.

It has often seemed like Felix hasn’t been the best of fits into Simeone’s system. This season he has appeared in 11 La Liga matches, with six of his appearances coming from the bench.

Plenty of his minutes have been as a substitute since joining as he has struggled to nail down a consistent starting spot.

His best goalscoring season for Atletico came in 2021–22 where he scored eight league goals. There is no doubt a very talented player in Felix, but Atletico have struggled to consistently unlock him.

Alongside Man Utd’s interest, German champions Bayern Munich have also been keeping tabs on the 22-year-old.

After the departure of Robert Lewandowski in the summer, Bayern are keen to add some more firepower. The German side currently sit second in the Bundesliga and have had some bumpy moments this season.

Despite being only one point off the top, Bayern have dropped points in five of their 12 league matches this season.

As Felix is now available on the market, Man Utd and Bayern could battle it out for his signature.
