Harry Maguire has discovered whether he will remain Manchester United captain under Erik ten Hag after the coach appeared at a press conference on Monday morning.
Many fans and pundits have called for Ten Hag to appoint a new skipper at Old Trafford due to Maguire’s disappointing performances last season. The centre-back struggled, along with most of his team-mates, as Manchester United finished sixth in the league and went another season without a trophy.
Other supporters and pundits, of course, have leapt to Maguire’s defence. They think the Englishman will improve as long as he is given trust by Ten Hag.
The Dutchman has now revealed his stance on the captaincy issue. Ahead of Manchester United’s pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Tuesday, Ten Hag said (via the Daily Mirror): “Harry Maguire is the captain.
“He’s an established captain, he’s achieved a lot of success, so I don’t doubt this issue.”
The 29-year-old now knows he has the full support of his manager. This should help him to get back to his best and ultimately turn things around.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes could be left disappointed by the verdict. They were both high on the list of potential captains, should Maguire have been stripped of the armband.
Ten Hag giving Ronaldo the captaincy could have convinced him to stay at Old Trafford. The striker has told Manchester United officials of his desire to leave to pursue more major honours.
Harry Maguire stance receives Gary Neville praise
But Ten Hag has resisted this urge and stamped his authority. He aims to keep continuity at the club by insisting Maguire is his captain.
Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville agrees with the decision. He tweeted: ‘Good!’
After receiving criticism from some United supporters, the pundit added: ‘So the same United fans fuming with me for applauding the decision to keep Maguire as captain seem to be without knowing criticising the new manager for his decision.
‘Maybe support Maguire and stop bullying him on here! The new manager obviously likes him.’
At the press conference, Ten Hag also spoke about Ronaldo’s future and a possible move for Frenkie de Jong.
