Harry Maguire ‘sure’ about instant Ten Hag impact as he names Man Utd certainty for next season

Harry Maguire believes that new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag will have a fantastic instant impact on a wounded dressing room.

United are looking to regroup both on and off the pitch following a dismal season. The club finished with their worst-ever points total in Premier League history, but diving deeper exposes a host of problems.

Indeed, 12 defeats contributed to them finishing sixth, four places down from their 2020/21 campaign. And a 9-0 aggregate defeat to Liverpool plus a 4-0 defeat to Brighton are only two of several low points.

However, as Man Utd‘s current chapter closes, another one opens with Ten Hag replacing Ralf Rangnick as the manager.

The Dutchman has a big task on his hands to turn his new club around but arrives from Ajax with an exciting reputation.

Maguire is one player whose form slipped last season and he has backed Ten Hag to help him improve.

“It’s been a tough campaign, no hiding away from that,” Maguire told a press conference. “It was a disappointing season individually and as a group.

“Football’s my life. I care about the club so much. I care about winning matches and taking the club to where it should be, where the fans deserve it to be.

“I’m sure on the first day of pre-season, everybody will be buzzing around, doing their best to impress and coming back in shape. We have a big season ahead.

“We know we are going to improve because last season was nowhere near good enough. The new manager will bring positive energy and the lads will go with that.”

Maguire faced heavy criticism for his performances this season, but showed promise in the 2020/21 campaign.

The England international remains a Three Lions regular and was speaking ahead of their upcoming Nations League duties.

He is also the United captain and so knows he has to get back to his previous form if he wants to continue at the club.

However, Maguire is not the only one looking to address a recent slide in form.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes scored 28 goals in 2020/21, but dropped off this term. Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford also looked a shadow of his former self.

He returned from shoulder surgery in October, but struggled to get back to his top level.

Elsewhere in the front line, United are yet to see the best of Jadon Sancho after his mixed debut season at Old Trafford.

As such, while Ten Hag will want new signings, there is a lot of potential to bring out in his current squad.
