Insider offers huge verdict on Man Utd snare for Brazilian superstar as part of takeover plans
Dean Jones has given his verdict on the potential of Manchester United signing Neymar if Sheikh Jassim takes control of the club.
Neymar has been one of the world’s most talented players for much of his career. Following a move from his native Brazil to Barcelona, he quickly rose to prominence in Europe.
Indeed, 22 goals and nine assists in just 33 league games in his second season at Camp Nou showed the talent he possessed.
At one point, he was seen as next in line to sit on the throne that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had occupied for years as the best players in the world.
While he’s never been seen as the absolute no.1 player in the world, he’s been up there for a number of years. That status has continued during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.
He moved to the Ligue 1 side seemingly to get out of the shadow of Messi and Luis Suarez at Barcelona. In 173 games for the Parisienne outfit, he’s scored 118 goals and provided 77 assists – more than one goal contribution each game on average.
TEAMtalk recently revealed PSG are ‘actively looking to cash in’ on their star. He’ll still command a very good fee given his talent, but he won’t do forever and given he’s now 31, they seem to have identified now as the right time to let him go and recoup some cash.
Man Utd, Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle United have reportedly all been informed that he’s available for transfer.
Verdict given on Neymar to Man Utd
United seem to have heeded that notice from PSG the most of any of those sides.
It was recently reported that Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al-Thani – a prospective buyer of United – has Neymar in his sights for a transfer.
Indeed, should the Qatari businessman gain control of the club, his meteoric first piece of business would be attempting to sign the Brazilian star.
That investment would show he’s serious about pumping money in to improve things on the pitch. It would surely make United title contenders, given they’re already on an upwards trajectory this season.
Transfer insider Jones has since given his verdict on that move, suggesting it would be tricky due to the fee Neymar would command.
“I just think it’s so difficult to make this happen. I mean, the financing that’s attached to Neymar is extortionate. He earns something like €30m a season. He’s on a contract that runs for a couple more years at PSG,” he told GIVEMESPORT.
“Look, I know there’s going to be intrigue around him and Chelsea have had interest in him, of course. Now there are links with United because of the pending takeover.
“I just really don’t understand how this becomes a situation that opens up as actually doable.”
It’s fair for Jones to raise concerns regarding the move. There surely aren’t too many sides across the globe that could afford to sign Neymar, who would likely still go for north of £100million.
However, reports have suggested Sheikh Jassim’s offer to buy United was worth more than £5billion. Clearly, he has money, and that would be invested into the club, so Neymar might not be out of reach if he does succeed in buying the Old Trafford outfit.
