Man Utd ‘intensively considering’ eyebrow-raising move for Leeds star as replacement for costly Solskjaer mistake

Robin Koch and Patrick Bamford

Manchester United are ‘intensively considering’ a shock move for Leeds United centre-back Robin Koch, according to reports.

It’s no secret that Erik ten Hag is looking to bolster his defence this summer, with Harry Maguire being increasingly linked with an exit from the Red Devils.

Koch has shown in the past that he can be a solid defender on his day. But, given he was part of a relegated Leeds team, it is somewhat of a surprise to see Man Utd pushing for his signature.

Although, the 26-year-old will be available on a free transfer due to a relegation clause in his contract. So, be a cheap addition for the Red Devils.

As a result, according to Kicker, Man Utd are ‘intensively considering’ signing Koch this summer. Indeed, the report adds that they are ‘in the mix,’ along with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen.

Last season, Koch made 36 Premier League appearances for Leeds, starting the vast majority of them.

Despite a few good performances, he was unable to prevent the Whites’ relegation, in a season where they conceded a staggering 78 goals. This was by far the worst defensive record of any Premier League team.

Ten Hag eyes defensive recruits

As mentioned, Man Utd are definitely in the market for a new centre-back this summer.

Ten Hag seems desperate to get Maguire off the books. For example, he included him in a reported part-exchange deal for Declan Rice, which also includes Scott McTominay.

So, clearly, the manager will have to bring in at least one new defender this summer.

Currently on Ten Hag’s radar is Monaco centre-back Axel Diassi, who could be signed as an alternative to Kim Min-jae, who Man Utd have missed out on.

But, Koch has now reportedly emerged as another potential option. Although, it would still be quite a shock to see it happen.

However, Ten Hag is clearly doing everything he can to get Maguire off the books at the moment. Swap deals, loans and permanent sales have all been discussed.

That’s no surprise, though, considering the England international is on a wage of around £190,000-per-week.

But, what’s certain is that Man Utd will get nowhere near the staggering £80m fee they paid for Maguire, as sanctioned by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

So, it will be interesting to see if Ten Hag opts to bring in Koch. He’s certainly a cheap option, but, despite these reports, Diasi still seems to be a more likely signing.
