Jadon Sancho ‘battling to save Man Utd career’ as ‘bitterly disappointed’ Ten Hag responds in sternest of ways

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is at loggerheads with Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho faces a huge task in winning Erik ten Hag around and salvaging his Manchester United career after daring to question his manager’s honesty on social media.

The winger joined United two summers ago in a £73m switch from Borussia Dortmund after a long, protacted chase. However, despite his stellar form in the Bundesliga for BVB, the 23-year-old has rarely shown anywhere near that form that persuaded United to splash out a fee that still sits fifth in their top 10 record signings of all time.

Indeed, having been sent on an individual training camp by Ten Hag to the Netherlands last season and largely being in and out of his manager’s plans, Sancho will have hoped the 2023/24 season will have brought him a fresh start.

However, after being involved off the bench in the first three matches of the season, Sancho was left out of the squad entirely as United slipped to a 3-1 defeat at Arsenal.

That axing prompted Ten Hag to tell the media that the player had been overlooked after failing to reach the required standards in training.

The winger, though, clearly disagreed with his manager’s claims, intimating on social media that Ten Hag was not being truthful over his absence.

“Please don’t believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that [are] completely untrue,” Sancho wrote on X. “I have conducted myself in training very well this week. I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I have been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair!

The statement continued: “All I want to do is play football with a smile on my face and contribute to my team. I respect all decisions that are made by the coaching staff, I play with fantastic players and [I’m] grateful to do so which I know every week is a challenge. I will continue to fight for this badge no matter what!”

With Sancho letting his emotions get the better of him, the Daily Telegraph claims Ten Hag has been left ‘stunned’ by Sancho’s response.

Indeed, Sancho’s use of the word “scapegoat” has apparently not been taken too well by the Red Devils boss. The report claims the Dutchman feels he has gone out of his way to give the player’s United career a number of kickstarts and his response to his dropping has not gone down well with the boss.

Sources have told the Telegraph that Ten Hag feels ‘bitterly disappointed’ by his reaction overall. The report also claims that, as a result of the falling out, the 23-times capped England winger is now battling to save his career at Old Trafford.

It remains to be seen if Sancho will offer an apology to his manager as a result of the outburst.

But in the meantime, he may face disciplinary actions, not unlike the punishment that befell Cristiano Ronaldo last season when he stormed down the tunnel following his failure to get off the bench in a Premier League game.

The United boss was also absent from training at Carrington on Monday, albeit not that unusual on the first day of the international break, with Sancho going through his paces with other members of United’s coaching staff.

However, there remains a feeling that Sancho may have even kicked his last ball for United as a result of the falling out.

Sancho has transfer options to leave Man Utd

The Turkish transfer window still remains open until September 15, though the paper acknowledges that no club would be able to match his mammoth £250,000 a week wages.

There is reported interest from Saudi Arabia, though links there have also been played down according to sources close to the paper.

And on Monday it was claimed that Chelsea and United had discussed a possible loan swap between Sancho and the Spanish left-back, Marc Cucurella, whom United were chasing before ultimately opting for Sergio Reguilon.

Either way, the player now faces a big battle to not just get Ten Hag back onside but also win his place back in the United side. He appears to have fallen behind Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Facundo Pellistri in the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Indeed, the selection of Antony ahead of Sancho has puzzled quite a few in the game with Rio Ferdinand suggesting the Brazilian gets preferential treatment from Ten Hag.

The former United defender told his Vibe with Five YouTube channel: “Sancho, in his defence, I think he is sitting there looking at the areas in which he plays and thinking, ‘How is this guy still playing?’

“I reckon he’s still there thinking Antony, how is he playing in front of me? I guarantee you he will be sitting there thinking that.

“Garnacho is probably saying the same thing. Garnacho comes on after 84 minutes and almost gets the winner. Because he is a threat.”

Sancho has made 82 appearances for United, scoring 12 times and adding six assists.
