Pundit questions Man Utd star’s England woes, claiming Ten Hag duo can help spark thrilling comeback

Paul Scholes reckons Manchester United forward Jadon Sancho should be in the England squad ahead of Manchester City’s Jack Grealish.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate picked a 28-man squad on Thursday for the final camp before the World Cup. England face Italy and Germany looking to finish their Nations League campaign on a high.

However, the bigger story is over who will stay and who will go in November, when Southgate makes his picks for Qatar.

Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho and team-mate Marcus Rashford both missed out once again. Sancho has had a strong start to the season and insisted he is doing all he can to improve his form.

And those comments came after he scored for United on Thursday in their 2-0 Europa League win over Sheriff Tiraspol.

As for who has made it for England, Man City’s Grealish is among the attackers amid a lack of minutes and a lack of goals. Scholes therefore claimed that Sancho should be ahead of the former Aston Villa man in the pecking order.

“Gareth’s picked his players for a reason, possibly from previous squads,” Scholes said.

“I think he [Sancho] probably deserves to be in over Jack Grealish at the minute.

“He scored a good goal against Liverpool and showed signs tonight. He’s better when he’s coming inside and linking play.”

Sancho, who cost Man Utd over £70million from Borussia Dortmund in 2021, struggled in his debut campaign at Old Trafford. Still, he has hit the ground running under manager Erik ten Hag this term.

And Scholes added that Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen could be key in helping Sancho rediscover the form he showed for the Bundesliga club.

“He doesn’t have that electrifying pace to go past someone on the outside or on the inside,” the pundit added to BT Sport of the winger.

“When he was good at Dortmund, he had [Erling] Haaland, [Achraf] Hakimi – he always had someone to link with.

“At Manchester United, if he can link with Fernandes or Eriksen, who are clever players to link with, he could be a good player for Man United.”

Sancho has scored eight goals and assisted three others in 46 Man Utd appearances.

Winger needs to continue form

The message is simple for Sancho: continue in this current form and he can have no complaints about not trying hard enough for a World Cup spot.

Sancho did not play much for England at Euro 2020. But, in the quarter-final win over Ukraine, he impressed and announced himself as an exciting option for Southgate.

He has proven for Dortmund that he can be a deadly goal threat from both central areas and out wide.

Sancho needs to cement this current form if he wants his place in Qatar.

And he will surely be looking at players such as Jarrod Bowen and Ivan Toney as players who he can overtake.

Aside from the duo, Harry Kane, Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling and Bukayo Saka are right at the heart of Southgate’s thinking.

Grealish has recently put himself in that category, but surely his place is not certain if he does not play much football.

Bowen and Toney play regularly for West Ham and Brentford, respectively, but they are newcomers and Sancho will definitely see himself overtaking the duo if he carries on his current form.
