Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho has revealed which two Premier League rivals were hoping to sign him last summer.
Sancho left Manchester City in August 2017 to get regular game time elsewhere. He went on to join German outfit Borussia Dortmund and became a Bundesliga star.
The attacker managed 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games for BVB, leading to rumours of a Premier League return.
United soon became the frontrunners to complete a deal with Dortmund, although it took a while. After entering talks over Sancho’s capture in 2020, they announced his signing the following summer.
The deal cost United £73million, with Sancho opting to pen a five-year contract at Old Trafford.
The England international endured a slow start back in England but is now in good form. He has registered goal contributions in recent matches against Leeds and City.
During an interview with Sky Germany (via HITC), Sancho revealed two English clubs were aiming to land him. And they seemingly got their players to work on convincing the 21-year-old to join.
Jadon Sancho talks summer transfer
“I’d met Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw with the national team. They always said, ‘Come to United’,” Sancho said.
“There were also the guys from Chelsea and Liverpool, who all tried to convince me of their club. But it only really got serious after the European Championship.”
Last week, Sancho revealed how three United players were helping him to improve.
“I’m here with a lot of great players and I’m learning from the best,” the wide man told MUTV.
Manchester United to move for Moussa Dembele this summer
Moussa Dembele is a target for Manchester United this summer as Lyon exit is on the cards
“You’ve got Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Pogba, Raphael Varane. All these guys have won major trophies and just being in the changing room with them gives you a blessed feeling.
“I’m definitely learning from them, on and off the pitch, especially in terms of their recovery and how they make themselves better.
“I’m taking in all the information I can and trying to put it into my game.”
Dimitar Berbatov sends advice to Man Utd
Meanwhile, former striker Dimitar Berbatov believes the Red Devils should raid Chelsea for a top player.
During an interview with the Daily Express, Berbatov said: “At centre-back, obviously, I have a bit of difficulty here, but Manchester United do need to sign a centre-back.
“They have five players for that position, and still things are not going quite well. [I will say] Rudiger because I’m concentrated on him.
“But he, based on his performances, is a good fit, honestly. He’s aggressive. He’s good on the ball, so he can be a good choice.
“In the case of Rudiger or any player who is good enough to play in big football [games], I can see, in the case of Rudiger, him going where he can win something.
“I cannot imagine him going places where he cannot win anything. And I’m saying this because United haven’t won the Premier League for what? Eight, nine years already?
“So if he goes someplace else, he’s going to be looking for a team that is going to win titles, cups, medals. In the case of United, that’s hard to do now.”
