James Garner has said he wants to impress new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, but admitted that his future remains unclear.
The midfielder is one of the brightest first-team prospects at Old Trafford after his recent rise away from the club. While a spell on loan at Watford did not work out, he then flourished at Nottingham Forest.
In fact, Forest re-signed Garner on another loan spell last season and he was a driving force in their Premier League promotion push.
But Garner has not had chance to slow down after the end of the domestic season. Instead, he has cemented his status as an England Under-21 international.
As for his long-term future, Everton are reportedly among four Premier League teams – aside from Forest – chasing him.
Garner, though, wants to focus first on making a big impression on new United boss Ten Hag.
“I’ve not spoken to [Ten Hag] yet,” the 21-year-old told 90min. “From the play-off final I’ve gone straight to being with England so I’ve had no rest and no break yet.
“It’s been football, football, football. I’ve not spoken to anyone at the club yet. It’s time for a rest now. I’m not too sure what the future holds.
“I’m not too sure, personally [regarding any preference]. I’ve not had much time to think in honesty.
“I’ve gone from the Championship play-off final to international football. I’ve not had a breather or time to think about what I want. I’d like to go on pre-season and impress.
“It’s down to me as a player to impress and make a mark. I know how good a style of football Ajax play so it’s exciting.”
James Garner has Man Utd chance
The Daily Mail, meanwhile, reports that Ten Hag will give Garner a chance to impress him and earn a first-team role.
The rest of the first team are big fans of Garner and believe he has a lot of potential at Old Trafford.
Indeed, Premier League veteran Juan Mata – who is leaving Man Utd this summer – keen to lavish the praise on his fellow midfielder.
But Mata is not the only midfielder leaving United this summer, meaning Garner could well stay at the club this season.
James Garner in demand
Nottingham Forest midfielder James Garner is attracting a lot of interest from PL teams. He is currently on loan from Manchester United and Erik Ten Hag will have to decide whether to keep or sell the youngster.
Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Jesse Lingard are all leaving, so there are gaps to fill in Ten Hag’s team.
The former Ajax boss is targeting a reunion with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong. However, the new coach will need more than just one recruit.
And given United’s long-standing reputation of bringing through academy talent, it is the perfect chance to enter the first team.
