Jamie Carragher tears into ‘nonsense’ job as Ralf Rangnick’s Man Utd future is cleared up

Manchester United Caretaker Manager Ralf Rangnick speaks to Manchester United's Anthony Elanga during the Premier League match at Old Trafford

The part-time consultancy role Ralf Rangnick will take up at Manchester United next season has come in for fierce criticism from Jamie Carragher.

The German was chosen by United as an interim replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back in November. He arrived at Old Trafford with a fierce reputation, having enjoyed success at pretty much every club he has worked for. However, inspiring United’s under-performing stars has proven far harder than expected.

Furthermore, his reign has been riddled with controversy and criticism over his methods.

United enjoyed a 3-0 win over Brentford in Rangnick’s last match in charge at Old Trafford on Monday night. That said, the team still faces a nervous wait to see if they qualify for the Champions League this season. They remain five points adrift of Arsenal, in fourth, having played two games more.

As such, a Europa League berth looks the most likely outcome for the Red Devils.

It all means that new manager Erik ten Hag faces a huge task to turn United’s fortunes around.

They have slipped a long way behind Manchester City and Liverpool. And he faces a tall order in closing the gap on the sides, who look on course for a Champions League final showdown.

Ten Hag will take on the challenge with plenty of recommendations from Rangnick. The German moves into a consultancy role from July 1, which will likely see him working just four days a month for the club over the next two years.

Furthermore, it was announced last week that Rangnick is also to become the new full-time coach of Austria.

Now Carragher has torn into Manchester United for allowing that to happen.

“Ralf Rangnick isn’t really a manager, he’s a director of football. He’s someone who helps the coaches or builds the club,’ Carragher told Sky Sports.

“I’ll be honest with you I just don’t get that. I don’t think you can be manager of Austria and work for Manchester United.

“He can work for Manchester United in that role…well that’s wrong. That should not be happening.

“The manager of Austria should not be working part time for Manchester United. That’s just a nonsense! It’s one or the other.”

Ralf Rangnick admits Man Utd spell hasn’t gone to plan

Rangnick himself has expressed disappointment at the way his spell in charge of United has panned out.

And while they enjoyed a pleasing win over Brentford – you can read our Player Ratings right here – the team has too often fallen short of the required standards.

“In the end I’m not happy with the results [overall], especially in the last four or five weeks.

“Until the West Ham game we were still in the race in three competitions.

“We had good moments until that West Ham game, we conceded fewer goals. But in the last few weeks performances have not been as good as they should have been. In general we have lacked consistency.”

Carragher right to call out United

Carragher is right to label Rangnick’s role at Old Trafford ‘a nonsense’.

The team has had far too many coaches and technical directors on the payroll in recent seasons, leading to a lack of leadership.

And while Ten Hag will bring in his own team, it will likely leave United with far too many voices and different ideas.

Furthermore, how will the role of Ten Hag impact of the job John Murtough does. The club will hope the pair can work side by side, but it may be in the long term that Rangnick gets phased out.

The fact his regime has not reportedly gone down well among the United players tells its own story.

So, in theory, perhaps the best course of action would be for Rangnick to depart the club and make a clean break once this season is concluded.

Meanwhile, one man who has divided opinion this season is Cristiano Ronaldo. Roy Keane, though, knows exactly what United should do with the player this summer.
