Manchester United have announced that Jesse Lingard will leave this summer when his contract expires, with his future still unclear.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford for over some time now. Last summer, West Ham had interest in him following the midfielder’s successful loan spell there.
Lingard instead opted to stay at United, only to continue to struggle for game time.
As a result, he looked to move to Newcastle in January, but Man Utd priced the Magpies out of a deal.
However, Lingard is in the final year of his contract and so the Red Devils confirmed his exit on Wednesday.
A club statement read: “We’d like to take this opportunity to thank Jesse for all of the memories he’s helped create during his two decades here and wish him the best of luck in his future career.”
Indeed, Lingard rose through the United academy ranks having joined the club at Under-9s level.
He entered the first team under Louis van Gaal in 2014. Lingard subsequently scored the winner in United’s FA Cup final triumph over Crystal Palace in 2016.
Following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival in the dugout, though, the Englishman struggled for game time.
He had made England’s 2018 World Cup squad before Solskjaer arrived, but soon found himself in a battle for minutes. Lingard recently made a return to the Three Lions’ set-up during his spell at West Ham.
However, he is now out of the running again due to his struggles for game time at Old Trafford.
Lingard is the second player United confirmed to be leaving the club on Wednesday. The Red Devils earlier announced Paul Pogba’s departure, the France midfielder also out of contract at the end of June.
Lingard deserved better Man Utd chance
Lingard showed his talents under Van Gaal and Mourinho, but deserved more of a chance under Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick.
His West Ham loan spell – during which he also won a Premier League Player of the Month award – showed he can still be a valuable asset.
But now is the time for Lingard to take on a new adventure and get back to his best.
Jesse Lingard on the brink of a return to West Ham
Jesse Lingard is seemingly closing in on a return to West Ham, with reports suggesting they’ve offered to match the wages he earns at Manchester United
The Hammers are once again reportedly the frontrunners to snap the 32-cap England international up.
There, he could reunite with David Moyes who helped him blossom in his early Man Utd career.
