Jesse Lingard transfer latest: Man Utd star has preference as four Serie A clubs queue up for deal

Four Serie A clubs are reportedly in the running to sign Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard this summer, although the player has his own preference for where he would like to be next season.

The England playmaker’s current contract runs out at the end of the current campaign and it looks at a certainty, at this stage, that he will quit the club for a fresh challenge.

Italian journalist Rudy Galetti claims that AC Milan, Juventus, Inter Milan and Jose Mourinho’s Roma all want Lingard. However, Galetti adds that the midfielder would prefer to remain in the Premier League.

But what Lingard wants and what he will get, in terms of a move, are potentially problematic.

Indeed, Galetti adds that there is more chance of the 29-year-old playing in Italy next season than England.

He tweeted: “Despite his preference to stay in the #EPL, it looks like Jessie [sic] #Lingard’s next destination may be really Italy.

“[AC Milan] and [Juventus] – but also [Inter Milan] and [ASRoma] – are interested in the player.”

Lingard has had a forgetful campaign after finding United first-team chances tough to come by. That, in turn, has led him to the decision to try his luck elsewhere.

Newcastle, West Ham potential destinations

Newcastle have been strongly linked with moves for the attacking midfielder. However, even the cash-rich Magpies are scared off by his financial demands.

Lingard is said to want in excess of £150,000-a-week, which is comfortably more than top earner Bruno Guimaraes is already paid.

West Ham are also expected to try and bring the player back to the London Stadium. Indeed, Lingard had a hugely successful loan spell at the London Stadium in the second half of last season.

In total, Lingard has made 232 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions. During that time has notched 35 goals and added 21 assists.

However, this season he has scored just twice in 22 games for the club.

Lingard could be better suited to Italian football

Despite his apparent reluctance to head to Serie A, Lingard may just find the slightly slower pace of the game more to his liking.

The midfielder still has plenty of quality, as he showed with the Hammers last season. But a complete change of scenery is probably just what he needs.

A move to Roma, in particular, makes sense, given his links to Jose Mourinho in the Italian capital.

The fact that former United centre-back Chris Smalling continues to excel there and Tammy Abraham is banging in the goals makes it a logical option.

England boss Gareth Southgate has also shown that he is still willing to pick Abraham, despite him playing abroad. And with a World Cup just around the corner, a move to Italy could provide the perfect ticket to Qatar.
