€40m price tag placed on midfield pivot in sights of Manchester United

Joao Palhinha Raheem Sterling February 2022

Reported Manchester United target Joao Palhinha has a price tag of between €30m-€40m, according to a report in Portugal.

United have had scouts scouring Portugal for the few two seasons and given the success of Bruno Fernandes, they will live in hope of landing another diamond. Fernandes arrived from Sporting for an initial £47m in January 2020. That could rise to £67.7m with certain add-ons.

And those add-ons looked nailed on after a start which saw him hit 12 goals and eight assists from 22 games. He followed that up with 28 goals and 17 assists last season to leave United’s scouts looking for a Fernandes mark II.

And one of the players United are believed to have been scouting is Joao Palhinha.

Over the weekend the Mirror claimed that United were weighing up a move for the Sporting defensive midfielder.

And now Sport Witness has uncovered claims from Record that Manchester United are ‘attentive’ to the Portugal international.

Sporting apparently had agreed to sell the star last month, despite the player only penning a new deal in December.

However, the new contract that ties him to Sporting until 2026, is understood to have been a deal to protect the players value.

Now though claims from another Portuguese outlet have supported suggestions that Palhinha is on his way out.

O Jogo say Sporting will find a suitor for Palhinha in the summer and he “should leave for between €30m-€40m.”

United will strengthen their squad in the summer and central midfield is set to be one of their targets.

Nemanja Matic, 33, only has one year of his existing deal remaining. Fred will also be into the last 12 months of his contract this summer.

Meanwhile, Paul Pogba will be out of contract on July 1. He has been offered a new deal by the club, but so far he has yet to put pen to paper.

Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata will also leave when their deals expire. And Donny van de Beek is also set to depart Old Trafford.

Van de Beek is on loan at Everton and a successful spell at Goodison will put him in the shop window this summer.
