Kompany reveals Burnley plans for Weghorst after Man Utd loan; could be playing at Turf Moor next season

Wout Weghorst of Man Utd

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany will hold talks with Wout Weghorst over his future at the club once his loan spell with Manchester United ends.

The Netherlands international has struggled to find goal-scoring form with the Red Devils. But, his tenacity and work rate has gained him some admirers among the Old Trafford faithful.

However, Weghorst could potentially play a big role for Burnley, after they secured their promotion back into the Premier League. So, it will be interesting to see where he ends up next season.

Erik ten Hag brought the 30-year-old in on loan in January, as a stop-gap solution to the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The move came off the back of a successful loan spell for Besiktas, where he scored nine goals in 18 games prior to his move to Manchester.

However, despite earning regular selection by Ten Hag, Weghorst has just two goals in 27 appearances for Man Utd to date.

Now, he is expected to return to Burnley at the end of the campaign, but it remains to be seen whether or not he will be playing at Turf Moor next season.

Kompany: Weghorst is a Burnley player

Kompany is currently looking ahead to Burnley playing in the Premier League next season, after the former Manchester City star guided them to promotion and a Championship title.

The Clarets will make several signings as they look to prepare their squad for the top flight.

Weghorst has been linked with a move to PSV Eindhoven in recent days. So, there is a lot of speculation surrounding his future.

But, Weghorst is under contract at Turf Moor until 2025, so there is no reason why the forward wouldn’t be in Kompany’s plans.

The Belgian has been impressed with Weghorst’ contribution to Man United’s top four aims and League Cup victory since moving to Old Trafford.

Now, he wants him to finish the season strongly, including in the FA Cup final against Kompany’s old club Manchester City.

Speaking to the Mirror, Kompany said: “He’s a player from Burnley football club who has played in the top four of the Premier League for Manchester United and also for Holland.

“The most important thing for me – and it’s a tough one for me to say obviously because of the Cup Final – is for him personally to finish the season on a high. But still, I want him to do well and we will have the conversation.”

Weghorst has made just 20 Burnley appearances since moving to the Lancashire club  on transfer deadline day last year, scoring two goals as the club were relegated from the Premier League.

But now, he could potentially get the chance to redeem himself, if Burnley don’t sell him this summer.
