Man Utd learn exact price needed to snare prime Ten Hag objective ahead of Barcelona, Bayern Munich

Jeremie Frimpong and Mario Hermoso, Bayer Leverkusen vs Atletico Madrid

Manchester United have found out exactly how much they need to pay to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, with the right-back also a target for Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Frimpong was born in Amsterdam but joined the Manchester City academy at the age of nine. He made it into the Citizens’ U23 team in 2018 but did not see any obvious route into Pep Guardiola’s senior squad and therefore left for Scottish club Celtic in September 2019.

According to transfermarkt, Celtic paid just €380,000 when signing the defender, and the move proved to be a masterstroke.

Frimpong impressed during a year and a half at Celtic Park before Leverkusen came in for him. Celtic made a good profit as the German club paid £9.75m for Frimpong.

The 22-year-old has since established himself as a top Bundesliga right-back. He has been in great form this season, managing eight goals and five assists in 26 league outings. Frimpong has also managed two assists each in the Champions League and Europa League. Leverkusen have dropped down from the UCL to Europa League and will face Belgian team Union Saint-Gilloise in the quarter-finals.

Frimpong will be hoping to lift the Europa League title with Leverkusen as it could be his last season with the club. According to Sky Sport Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, the Dutchman is ‘open’ to leaving Leverkusen this summer. And three big clubs are chasing him.

On Friday, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Man Utd have held ‘direct talks’ with Frimpong’s agent, Jeffrey Lemmert. The Red Devils are seemingly growing in confidence about completing a deal.

However, Man Utd are not alone in hoping to sign the impressive young talent. Romano states that European giants Barcelona and Bayern Munich are also interested in him.

Jeremie Frimpong price tag emerges

transfermarkt value Frimpong at €35m (£31m). But German source Bild now reveal that it will cost more than this for Man Utd, Barca or Bayern to capture Frimpong.

Instead, Leverkusen have set his price tag at €50m (£44m). When entering negotiations over Frimpong’s exit, Leverkusen will point to his great performances this season as justification for that valuation.

Leverkusen are also protected by the player’s contract, which runs until June 2025.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag will be disappointed about not being able to land Frimpong on the cheap. But if he wants a top-class right-back to join, then Man Utd will simply have to pay a big fee.

Ten Hag already has Diogo Dalot and Aaron Wan-Bissaka at his disposal. The manager wants to keep Dalot but is happy to offload Wan-Bissaka. The Englishman is not good enough going forward to shine in a Ten Hag system.

Wan-Bissaka’s departure will make space in the squad for Frimpong to join. And he will then rival Dalot for a starting spot on the right side of defence.

Meanwhile, Ian Wright has heaped praise on a Man Utd loanee, adding more confusion to the transfer headache Ten Hag is facing.
