A key Man Utd player has reportedly made a big call over his future which could work against the Red Devils in 2022.
The Manchester club continue their Premier League campaign on Sunday by hosting Liverpool at Old Trafford. The clash could be an important one in deciding where the title will end up come May.
It will also show just what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are made of. They were beaten 4-2 by Leicester City in their last domestic outing. A Champions League win against Atalanta followed, although Man Utd were less than convincing in that game.
Liverpool are high in confidence after thrashing Norwich City and overcoming Atletico Madrid in their last two matches.
Solskjaer will be relying on a number of his most experienced players to get the win. However, one of them could be distracted ahead of kick-off as rumours about his future continue.
Spanish outlet AS (via 90Min) report that Paul Pogba has decided to postpone contract talks with the club.
Although progress has been made, the Frenchman doesn’t want discussions to resume until spring. His agent, Mino Raiola, has informed Man Utd of the decision.
Pogba is considering his options and believes a big-money offer could come in from elsewhere. Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and former club Juventus are all thought to be interested.
The 28-year-old is out of contract in June. That means one of the Champions League giants could finalise a pre-contract agreement with him as early as January.
The determination to postpone extension talks could be a negotiating tactic. Pogba may get the chance to compare Man Utd’s wage offer with that of Real, PSG or Juve’s.
The report also claims that Pogba is worried about his position in the team. He has recently been used on the left wing due to Solskjaer’s bloated attacking options. The star rarely gets played in central midfield, his preferred position, as he can be found out defensively there.
Any potential suitor would undoubtedly give him the chance to play where he wants. Pogba is one of the biggest names in football and was once the most expensive player in history.
Man Utd signed him from Juve in August 2016 for a then record £89million.
Man Utd midfielder lauds up-and-coming talent
Meanwhile, Nemanja Matic has heaped praise on teenage winger Anthony Elanga. The youngster made his full United debut against Leicester in the Premier League last season and played 90 minutes on the final day against Wolves.
Solskjaer also turned to Elanga in pre-season, but after the summer arrivals of Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo United’s attacking options have been swelled.
Elanga has starred in the Premier League Two division this term. He has notched four goals and one assist in four appearances.
Matic does not think it will be long before Elanga gets into Solskjaer’s first eleven.
“I’m always happy to help players when they are good lads who want to improve, they want to listen and to learn. Anthony is one of the young players who respects the players that are older than him and the players that have more experience,” the 33-year-old said.
“So I am very happy with the way he improves and the way he is training and playing in games.
“So I think he is a very important player for us, in the future, as I see him in the first XI in the next upcoming seasons.”
