Liverpool breathe sigh of relief after incredible Man Utd coup crashes back down to earth

Fears Liverpool may see one of the most important figures in their recent history join Man Utd have eased after two reports poured cold water on a Red Devils coup.
The story of the last five years in the Premier League has been Liverpool and Man City’s battle for supremacy. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola have split the last five Premier League trophies, with City coming out on top with four successes to Liverpool’s one.
Both clubs account for the four highest points tallies across a single Premier League season and all have been achieved since 2017. City’s incredible 2017/18 campaign set the new benchmark with a round 100 points.
City’s net spend has been far higher than Liverpool’s over that span, though the Reds have been no less successful in the market.
They’ve spent big when required and found great success with the likes of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk. However, more modest transfers for integral stars such as Andy Robertson have played just as big of a part in their success.
The mastermind behind Liverpool’s near-faultless transfer record in recent times was Michael Edwards.
The transfer guru stepped down over the summer, giving way to understudy Julian Ward who now heads Liverpool’s recruitment team.
Edwards remains without a new role at present after snubbing Chelsea over the summer. However, Football Insider recently claimed that could soon change.
They reported Edwards is close to reaching an agreement to join Manchester United.
Signing on with the Red Devils would be met with trepidation at Anfield. Indeed, United will always be able to outspend Liverpool and with a proven operator such as Edwards pulling the strings, United would fancy their chances of getting back among the big prizes.
However, two reports have poured cold water on any such notion Edwards will join Man Utd.
Michael Edwards ‘not close’ and ‘unlikely’ to join Man Utd
Firstly, CBS Sports reporter, Ben Jacobs, tweeted United do like Edwards. However, he stressed Edwards is ‘not close to joining’.
Furthermore, Jacobs added Edwards has made ‘no decision’ on his future and is ‘keeping all options open’. Jacobs concluded nothing is imminent, even with regards to Edwards joining United as late as next summer.
The Manchester Evening News gave their take on the speculation, describing the chances of Edwards taking up a role at Old Trafford as ‘unlikely.
Explaining why, it’s claimed Manchester United are more than happy with the players they signed last summer at the behest of John Murtough.
Lisandro Martinez, Tyrell Malacia, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Antony have hit the ground running. Murtough is United’s current football director and had a big hand in each of those arrivals.
If Edwards were to join, he may step on Murtough’s toes whose recent record is fantastic.
It’s acknowledged bringing Edwards on board would represent a significant coup. Though for now at least, the signs are pointing towards that not being the case, something that will warrant a sigh of relief over in Liverpool.
