Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has tipped Manchester United to sign two elite Premier League stars this summer, despite links to other targets.

The Red Devils are aiming to build on a decent first campaign under Erik ten Hag as they finished third in the table and also won the Carabao Cup.

However, it’s been a fairly quiet summer in terms of incomings so far with just Mason Mount arriving in a £60million deal from Chelsea.

Ten Hag is still after a goalkeeper and central striker though, with a new No.1 a real priority now after David de Gea’s decision to walk away on a free transfer.

Inter Milan’s Andre Onana has been on Ten Hag’s radar for some time, mainly due to the fact that the pair worked together at Ajax.

The Cameroon star has all the characteristics the United boss likes in a modern keeper in terms of his ability to play out from the back, something that was not a big strength of De Gea.

However, Fowler thinks the Old Trafford outfit should be looking closer to home for De Gea’s replacement.

He told the Daily Mirror: “I see Manchester United have been strongly linked with Inter’s Andre Onana, and that makes sense because his distribution is sensational, and he played for Ten Hag at Ajax.

“But don’t rule out Jordan Pickford. I know he only signed a new contract last February, but to me that makes it more rather than less likely he’ll move this summer. I can almost guarantee he had a release clause inserted in that contract.

“Pickford only had just over a year left when he signed the new deal, and he’s one of the best in the world, the recognised number one for one of the best international teams in the world. He’s handy on the ball too.

“United will have sniffed around to test how Everton are going to handle their ongoing profit and sustainability issues, so they’ll be absolutely on top of their keeper situation, no doubt, whether it’s Onana or Pickford.”

Striker search still pivotal for United

While a new keeper signing is a must for United, the same could also be said for a new No.9.

Atalanta star Rasmus Hojlund continues to be the firm favourite for a move, although Chelsea are reportedly trying to muscle in on that deal.

Fowler, however, is still convinced that United could snatch Harry Kane – even if Daniel Levy has no intention of selling to a Premier League rival, amid continued Bayern Munich interest.

Fowler added: “I simply don’t believe, either, they will have to limit their spending this summer, so a centre forward will arrive too, and I still wouldn’t rule out Harry Kane.

“I believe he’ll stay in the Premier League, because he wants to smash the all-time scoring record.

“But Spurs are absolutely miles away, so he’ll have to move, and United looks the most obvious destination.

“Maybe all this talk of having no money to spend is aimed at keeping any Kane fee down, as he only has a year left on his contract.”

United kick off the new Premier League campaign against Wolves on August 14.
