Man Utd announce exit of star who played for Ten Hag just one week ago
Man Utd and Sunderland have both confirmed a transfer between the two clubs has crossed the line, and the former Red Devils star has revealed he’s itching for a chance to prove his worth.
Pre-season offers a chance for managers to take a closer look at both the younger elements and fringe players within their squad.
One star who ticks both of those categories is goalkeeper Nathan Bishop. The 23-year-old was given an opportunity to test his mettle in pre-season and got 45 minutes during Man Utd’s 3-1 defeat to Wrexham on July 25.
The goalkeeping position has come under the microscope at Old Trafford this summer, with Andre Onana replacing David de Gea.
Dean Henderson may yet depart too, with a move to Nottingham Forest still being discussed.
Regardless, Erik ten Hag has seen fit to part ways with Bishop despite the uncertainty pervading the position.
The move was confirmed by both Man Utd and Sunderland via their official websites.
Bishop has signed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light for an undisclosed fee.
Reacting to the move, Bishop told Sunderland’s official website: “You see the direction that the club is going, playing young players and allowing them to express themselves and push on in a great league.
“I think that is so exciting, so I want to come in and earn the right to play for such a great team and a great club.”
Tony Mowbray’s side will hope to go one better next season after failing to secure promotion to the Premier League despite finishing inside the play-off positions.
But whether Bishop will have a major role in their promotion push is open to debate.
Indeed, when news of Bishop to Sunderland first broke one week ago, the Northern Echo suggested Mowbray will stick with Anthony Patterson as his No 1.
