Man Utd fix asking price for latest West Ham target after Maguire collapse as Burnley interfere

West Ham United may have cooled their interest in Harry Maguire from Manchester United, but they are now eyeing Alvaro Fernandez from the same club.

Man Utd recently accepted a deal in principle with West Ham to sell Maguire. However, the move has stalled and West Ham now seem to have ended their pursuit. It does not mean they are done in the transfer market, by any means, though.

According to reports in Spain, West Ham have become interested in young Man Utd left-back Alvaro Fernandez. The 20-year-old was on loan at Preston North End in the Championship last season.

He is now into the final year of his contract with his parent club, though, unless they activate an option to extend it by another 12 months.

Still behind Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia in the pecking order at Man Utd, it may be best for Fernandez to seek a permanent exit this summer.

And reports suggest he is of interest to West Ham, as well as promoted outfit Burnley. Both clubs have been in contact for him already, it is claimed.

West Ham’s current left-backs are Emerson Palmieri, who joined from Chelsea last summer, and Aaron Cresswell, who has been linked with Wolves this summer.

Burnley, meanwhile, only really have Charlie Taylor, who was tipped to return to Leeds United earlier in the transfer window.

Four European sides spy Fernandez

Further afield, he has caught the attention of Eintracht Frankfurt, Espanyol, Granada and Las Palmas.

Espanyol are aiming for promotion back to La Liga after their relegation, while Granada and Las Palmas are newcomers to the Spanish top flight. Eintracht Frankfurt, meanwhile, could offer him a new challenge in the German Bundesliga, with the added lure of Europa Conference League participation if they can get through the play-offs.

West Ham are his only other admirers with European football on offer after their success in last season’s Conference League earned them a place in this season’s Europa League.

For any of Fernandez’s suitors to sign him, Man Utd have set an asking price of €7m (£6m). However, his three Spanish suitors have been eyeing a loan deal with an option to buy, which would require Man Utd to extend his contract first.

There is also a chance they could lower their asking price to facilitate his exit, as long as they do not lose control of his career, which may imply some kind of buyback clause being inserted into the deal.

The former Real Madrid youth player made 42 appearances for Preston last season, registering six assists, but is yet to make his competitive debut for Man Utd.
