Man Utd forward’s future at breaking point after 13th straight snub, with January exit talks poised to take place

A Man Utd winger who’s been overlooked by Erik ten Hag on 13 successive occasions could leave in January, with a report claiming his agent will schedule talks very shortly.

Manchester United returned to competitive action last night when squaring off against Championship leaders Burnley. The Clarets came to Old Trafford full of confidence, but Ten Hag’s men made no mistake, booking their place in the EFL Cup quarter finals with a 2-0 victory.

United’s starting eleven had an unfamiliar feel given a string of World Cup-enforced absences. Indeed, Casemiro was forced to play out of position at centre-back with World Cup finalists Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane both unavailable.

Brazilian Antony was only named on the bench too, thus giving rising youngster Alejandro Garnacho another chance to shine from the off.

However, one player who was not granted an opportunity to prove his worth was Facundo Pellistri.

The Uruguayan, 21, was a £9m signing from Penarol back in the winter window of 2021. However, fast forward nearly two years and Pellistri is still yet to make his senior Man Utd debut.

He’s featured heavily for his national side in that time. Indeed, he started twice and got 30 minutes off the bench across Uruguay’s three group stage matches in Qatar. His situation at Old Trafford, however, can only be described as disappointing.

On no fewer than 13 occasions has Pellistri been named on the bench by Ten Hag this season. Yet not once has Ten Hag seen fit to introduce the winger and give him his senior club debut.

Clearly, Ten Hag does not believe Pellistri is up to snuff. Had United had a fully fit compliment available, Pellistri may not have even made the bench. If they sign Cody Gakpo in January as is expected, his situation will deteriorate even further.

Rumblings of Pellistri’s unhappiness began to emerge in early-November, right around the time Garnacho burst onto the scene.

The youngster has placed another obstacle in Pellsitri’s path to first-team minutes and the writing is on the wall.

The player’s agent, Edgardo Lasalvia, previously told ESPN Uruguay: “I think that with a good World Cup, as we think it will have, his departure is imminent.”

Fabrizio Romano later reported United could explore loan opportunities, and claimed Pellistri was on board with seeking a move away too.

Now, the Daily Express report Pellistri’s future is coming to a head with his agent poised to schedule exit talks.

Time up for Pellistri at Man Utd

They state Lasalvia is ‘determined to secure his client a way out’ of Old Trafford in January.

The player’s lack of first-team opportunities are predictably cited as the point of contention. The fact Pellistri got a taste of action in Qatar is suggested to be emboldening his desire to leave.

The agent is ‘expected’ to schedule talks with United very shortly, though the report stops short of providing any further detail.

If United do decide to cash in, it stands to reason they’d want to recoup at least what they paid in any permanent exit.

Alternatively, if they pursue the loan route as Romano suggested, a move to Spain could be on the agenda.

Pellistri previously enjoyed two loan spells with Alaves. LaLiga may be where he is given another opportunity to spread his wings.
