Man Utd gifted perfect Ronaldo compromise with January replacement willing and available

Man Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo with Portugal teammate Joao Felix

An ideal replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo is falling into Erik ten Hag’s lap, with a report revealing Man Utd can complete a deal for a player they previously missed out on signing.

Ronaldo’s tell-all interview with TalkTV has thrust his Manchester United career into serious doubt. Erik ten Hag told the club’s board he no longer wishes to manage the veteran striker. The club have taken their manager’s side and are exploring whether they can terminate Ronaldo’s contract.

Doing so would save the club around £16m in wages, per the Daily Mail. However, it would potentially leave Ten Hag lacking firepower in the second half of the season.

ESPN reported Ten Hag is wiling to take that chance if it means seeing the back of Ronaldo. United were and still are expected to sign a new centre-forward next summer anyway, with Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and PSG’s Kylian Mbappe in their sights.

Cody Gakpo is another and PSV Eindhoven’s talisman netted for Netherlands at the World Cup on Monday. However, today’s update regards a different forward who could be signed in a perfect compromise in January.

Spanish outlet AS report Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix still wants out in the winter window.

The 23-year-old Portuguese has fallen out with Atleti boss Diego Simeone. Felix is determined to force his way out, though concrete interest in a permanent deal is yet to emerge.

United pushed to sign Felix back in 2019 in the same window he left Benfica for Atletico in an eye-watering £113m deal. However, three years later, United may have the chance to right their wrong.

AS state the likeliest outcome – if Felix does depart in January – now looks to be a loan switch.

Loan switch the perfect compromise for Man Utd

That may actually be in United’s best interests given they intend to sign a permanent replacement for Ronaldo next summer.

Felix can play anywhere across the front line and Ten Hag is known to be seeking a more mobile forward than Ronaldo. He also wants greater work-rate than what Ronaldo provides and Felix brings that in abundance.

A six-month loan deal would tick many boxes, not least satisfying a player who’s at the end of his tether in Madrid.

United would also provide Ten Hag with a proven attacking option to ensure their chase for Champions League qualification isn’t hampered by a lack of firepower.

Furthermore, United could then proceed to target a more permanent option next summer safe in the knowledge they haven’t already spent big on a short-term fix in January.

PSG are also casting admiring glances Felix’s way, and French outlet MediaFoot claimed Paris is the player’s preferred destination between they and United.

However, United would come with a greater guarantee of game-time, something Felix has been starved of under Simeone of late.

PSG can already call upon Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar. As such, Felix stands a far better chance of generating regular starts at Old Trafford – especially if his potential arrival coincides with Ronaldo’s exit.
