Manchester United legend, David de Gea, is closing in on his ‘dream’ next move at the expense of a Chelsea star, with the opportunity only arising through a cruel injury blow, per reports.

De Gea, 32, left Man Utd as a free agent upon expiry of his contract on June 30. The veteran Spaniard left the club as a four-time Man Utd Players’ Player of the Year. He also departed having kept the most clean sheets of any goalkeeper in the Premier League last season.

De Gea’s limitations with the ball at feet ultimately cost him his Old Trafford career. One season was enough for Erik ten Hag who wasted no time replacing De Gea with Andre Onana earlier this summer.

A move to the cash-rich Saudi Pro League had been touted for De Gea’s next step. However, according to multiple reports, he could be in line for a shock switch to Real Madrid.

Such a move would’ve been unthinkable mere hours ago given the presence of Thibaut Courtois at the Bernabeu.

However, the giant Belgian suffered an ACL injury during training on Thursday morning that could rule him out for the entire 2023/24 campaign.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed Real are exploring the market for a new goalkeeper. Sky Sports claimed De Gea and fellow Spaniard Kepa Arrizabalaga are in their sights.

However, according to both talkSPORT and the Sun, it’s De Gea who manager Carlo Ancelotti has turned to.

As such, the path is now clear for Bayern Munich to ramp up a surprise loan move for Kepa amid goalkeeping issues of their own.

De Gea to Real Madrid ‘advanced’

talkSPORT state De Gea is in ‘advanced talks’ with Real Madrid and is ‘on the brink’ of signing up.

The Sun echo those claims, declaring Real are ‘on the verge’ of agreeing a deal with the goalkeeper.

Joining Real Madrid is labelled a ‘dream’ outcome for De Gea who came remarkably close to leaving Man Utd for Los Blancos way back in 2015.

United and Real agreed a fee, though as the minutes ticked down on the summer window’s deadline day, a faulty fax machine meant the necessary paperwork wasn’t filed on time.

Real blamed Man Utd for sabotaging the move, though did not return for De Gea the following year.

Keylor Navas assumed the starting role and only relinquished the gloves when Courtois arrived from Chelsea three years later in 2018.

But fast forward to present day and Courtois’ unfortunate knee injury has opened the door for De Gea to finally join Real Madrid.
