Man Utd legend slams Ten Hag stars who ’embarrassed’ themselves against Sevilla, but names three players who stood up tall
Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel raged at his former side’s collapse against Sevilla, though named three senior stars who can hold their heads up high.
United’s season is reaching crunch point with key clashes in the Europa League and FA Cup on the horizon. There’s still work to do in the league to wrap up a place inside the top four, though the cup competitions must take precedence first.
The first leg of United’s Europa League quarter final tie took place on Thursday night. The Red Devils stormed into a two-goal lead with Bayern Munich loanee, Marcel Sabitzer, bagging a brace.
However, it all began to unravel for the hosts just before half-time, beginning with Bruno Fernandes picking up a costly yellow card that rules him out of the return leg through suspension.
Raphael Varane was then unable to continue after exacerbating a pre-existing injury. His replacement, Harry Maguire, would later go on to score the second of two own goals.
But most worrying of all was an injury sustained by Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine went down under no contact, though Ten Hag has subsequently moved to quash fears over an Achilles injury.
As such, United will now travel to Seville next week with the tie in the balance after drawing 2-2. Furthermore, Erik ten Hag looks certain to be without regular starters Varane, Martinez, Fernandes and Marcus Rashford who is sidelined with a groin issue.
When running the rule over what he saw on BBC Radio 5 Live, United legend, Peter Schmeichel, savaged Ten Hag’s troops.
The Danish great lambasted certain sections of the United squad who “should be embarrassed” with their displays. Schmeichel stopped short of naming names, though did pick out three players who stood up tall.
De Gea, Casemiro, Sabitzer the only bright sparks
Schmeichel said (via the Mirror): “It’s a fair enough result, the way that it developed in the second half. The players of Manchester United have missed a very good opportunity here.
“A few players today need to have a look at themselves and think about whether they are contributing to the team enough. There are a few players who should be embarrassed with their performances.”
Schmeichel continued: “De Gea played well, he made two fantastic saves, couldn’t do anything about the goals. He kept Man Utd in the lead to no avail. Casemiro came back and played really well as well.
“The best player is the guy who scored two goals, Marcel Sabitzer was really good. His team-mates have let him down. he showed the way and they didn’t catch on to it.”
Schmeichel later concluded: “It’s 2-2 and as a Man Utd supporter, I’m really disappointed. This could and should have been a 5-0 win.”
United have the chance to rectify their misstep in the second leg in Spain. That tie will take place next Thursday, and will be quickly followed up by an FA Cup semi-final clash with Brighton less than 72 hours later.
But before then, a trip to Nottingham Forest awaits in the Premier League on Sunday.
