Man Utd ‘in limbo’ amid Weghorst pursuit, when ‘miles better’ compatriot should be signing instead

Burnley and Besiktas striker Wout Weghorst

Wout Weghorst will be a “handful” for Manchester United, but they could be doing a lot better than him, according to a former England international.

Weghorst is due to become Man Utd’s latest striker signing after they reached a deal to terminate his loan spell at Besiktas from Burnley and take him for their own. He will help fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was released in November.

United’s pursuit of the Netherlands international has raised some eyebrows. After all, he suffered relegation with Burnley last season, only scoring two Premier League goals.

It has been clear for a while that Man Utd would only be able to look for cheaper reinforcements this month. However, some feel they could have still managed to find a better solution than Weghorst.

That said, the 30-year-old averaged a goal every other game for Besiktas. He scored nine times from 18 games for them, so has been finding some form again.

Therefore, ex-England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes he will “do a job” for United. That said, their pursuit of him only proves that they are “in limbo”.

Robinson told Football Insider: “It stinks of a club that is in limbo.

“Look, Weghorst fits the bill. He will do a job. He is a number nine, a target man and a handful.

“But, where are Man Utd shopping? They need to sign a top striker. Weghorst seems to be a stop-gap.

“This is a player who Burnley have allowed to leave. He is a very good player but is he a Man Utd player? No.

“He is a striker and they need a striker but he’s not world class.”

‘Brilliant’ alternative to Weghorst identified

Robinson proceeded to suggest someone who would have been a smarter idea for Man Utd.

And his solution would have actually followed a similar theme, but in a more effective way.

He added: “They should be going for [Memphis] Depay. Depay is a miles better player then Weghorst. There should not be a choice.

“Depay would be a brilliant signing for Man Utd.

“I’m sure the fans would rather have Depay back because it is a different Depay to the one that left.”

The Barcelona attacker, another Netherlands international, did not do well in his first spell with Man Utd. But as Robinson referenced, he has improved vastly since then.

Out of contract at the end of the season, he may have been available for a cut-price fee. However, United have looked at other routes for this transfer window.

Weghorst is more of a target man than Depay, so they would have been different profiles anyway. Yet it may have been more inspiring to make a signing from Barcelona than Burnley.
