Man Utd move closer to capturing £80m Kane alternative after title winners greenlight blockbuster striker sale

Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos

Manchester United have been boosted in their pursuit of Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos after an instruction was given to his agent, according to a report.

Man Utd are in the market for a new number nine this summer after heavily relying on Marcus Rashford for goals this season. Two of the most obvious targets for them to consider have been Harry Kane and Victor Osimhen.

However, Man Utd recently shelved their interest in Kane because of Tottenham’s unreasonable asking price for a player in the final year of his contract.

Similarly, Napoli will be asking for too much money for Osimhen after winning the Serie A title. TEAMtalk exclusively revealed earlier this month that Napoli’s £150m valuation of the Nigeria international had prompted Man Utd to cool their interest.

Therefore, the search is still on for reinforcements up front at Old Trafford. They might become bidders for Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund, for example, while there have been links with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Randal Kolo Muani, though they are far from his only suitors.

Another option who could become a more serious target soon is Ramos. After stepping up following Benfica’s sale of Darwin Nunez to Liverpool last summer, the 21-year-old is emerging from his best ever goalscoring season.

Ramos found the net 27 times from 47 appearances in 2022-23, top scoring for Benfica as they won the Portuguese Primeira Liga title.

Jorge Mendes cleared to negotiate Goncalo Ramos move

Therefore, he has been identified as the next top Benfica talent that the club could cash in on. Indeed, according to the Daily Mirror, the Portuguese champions have now given his agent, Jorge Mendes, the green light to set up a transfer away.

Man Utd are the main suitors named in the report. They would be able to sign Ramos by meeting Benfica’s asking price of £80m plus add-ons.

Bruno Fernandes has already given his backing to any attempt Man Utd make to sign his international teammate. After featuring at the World Cup together, they now have a chance to become teammates at club level too.

Despite the parameters of a deal becoming clear and Benfica being open to doing business, it is not yet known if Man Utd believe their asking price is fair.

They have already turned away from deals for Kane and Osimhen because of excessive price tags. However, the difference with Ramos is that Benfica are actually open to cashing in on him.

About to turn 22, Ramos has a bright future ahead of him after coming through the ranks at Benfica. The fact that his contract in Lisbon is still due to last until 2026 strengthens his current club’s hand in negotiations, but if Mendes can convince Man Utd to make a move, it will be listened to.
