Manchester United have announced the permanent departure of Noam Emeran who’s joined Groningen, and the transfer fee and which teammate steered him to the Netherlands have been revealed.

Emeran, 20, never made a senior Man Utd appearance, though did make his mark in a Red Devils shirt. Indeed, the French left winger was on the scoresheet during Man Utd’s first pre-season clash against bitter rivals Leeds.

Nevertheless, his strike wasn’t enough to earn a reprieve, with a permanent switch to Dutch side Groningen taking shape over recent days.

The Manchester Evening News claimed an agreement had been struck on Wednesday. Now, both Man Utd and Groningen have confirmed the permanent switch has crossed the line via their official websites.

United reportedly fielded multiple loan approaches prior to the Groningen move. However, the Red Devils are well stocked for options on the left wing and believed a permanent exit would better serve Emeran’s development. Erik ten Hag already has Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho to choose from on the left side.

Emeran has signed a four-year contract with Groningen and per Fabrizio Romano, United will receive around €1m as a result.

United have also successfully inserted a “significant sell-on clause” into the agreement. As such, United could receive a second windfall in future years.

During his first interview as a Groningen player, Emeran revealed Dutchman Donny van de Beek played a significant role in steering him towards his new club.

“I’m looking forward to it,” said Emeran. “FC Groningen has a good plan for me and the conversations showed that the club knew me well as a player.

“This is the best choice for me to develop both on and off the field. My goals are of course to play a lot, score goals, provide assists, in short, become a better version of myself.”

Emeran continued: “I regularly participated in the first team of Manchester United in the preparation.

“Teammate Donny van de Beek told me that FC Groningen is a good club, with a lot of support and family.

“I have seen a video of the supporters during the previous home game. They really want to fight for their club and I want to fight for the supporters.”
