Man Utd nearing spectacular swap deal as Ten Hag baits Inter Milan with unwanted £31m star

Denzel Dumfries of FC Internazionale and Lautaro Martinez of FC Internazionale celebrate during the Serie A 2021/22 football match between FC Internazionale and SS Lazio at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, Milan

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is reportedly close to landing a long-term target with a tempting swap deal poised to finally secure an Inter Milan star’s move to Old Trafford.

Ten Hag has enjoyed an excellent first season at the United helm. Sure, there have been hiccups with 4-0, 6-3 and 7-0 hammerings at Brentford, Manchester City and Liverpool, respectively, best forgotten. But having already won their first piece of silverware in six years in the Carabao Cup, a promising end to the season still looks on the cards.

Indeed, United are very much hoping to add another two trophies to their haul. And they can move into the quarter-finals of the Europa League this evening if they complete the job against Real Betis.

And on Sunday they can also move into the FA Cup semi-finals if they dispatch of Fulham at Old Trafford.

Trophy success in the Europa League would earn United a place in next season’s Champions League. However, the Red Devils look well on track to also qualify through a high Premier League finish.

To that end, planning for next season is seemingly already underway. And with an inflated transfer budget at Ten Hag’s disposal, the United boss seemingly has three major targets in mind.

His main priority will seemingly be a new striker, with talk on Wednesday of a mega offer arriving for a £105m-rated Eintracht Frankfurt man.

However, Ten Hag also wants to bring in a new midfielder to compliment Casemiro in the heart of midfield.

Man Utd in talks over Dumfries swap deal

In addition, the United boss also wants a new right-back. In doing so, one of Portuguese star Diogo Dalot – out of contract in 2024 – or Aaron Wan-Bissaka could be sold.

Now, according to Football Insider, a deal for a new right-back is gathering pace.

And they claim talks are heating up between United and Inter Milan over a possible swap deal for Denzel Dumfries.

The Dutchman has long been mentioned with a move to United, after impressing during his time at Inter. Indeed, operating from a right wing-back position, Dumfries has seven goals and eight assists from 77 appearances for the Nerazzurri.

Inter have long been battling to retain his services in the wake of strong interest from the Premier League.

And with their financial issues taking a hit, it seems they are now ready to discuss his exit.

Indeed, per the report, the two clubs are in talks over a swap deal involving Dumfries and Victor Lindelof.

The move is described as a ‘real possibility’ too, with the £31m Swede falling way down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

The former Benfica man is now fourth choice under Ten Hag and will be allowed to leave this summer, with his deal expiring in 2024.

Move ticks a lot of boxes for both clubs

And the move is seen as the perfect solution for both clubs.

United’s wish to sign a new right-back is obviously very apparent. And Inter Milan too are in need of new cental defensive cover with Milan Skriniar poised to depart as a free agent.

Courted by Tottenham and United down the years, the Slovakian is likely to sign for Paris Saint-Germain on a four-year deal.

Inter, for their part, are reportedly looking for around £43m (€50m) for Dumfries. And with Lindelof valued at around £18m – £20m, United will need a cash adjustment to make the deal go through.

Football Insider though describes the move as ‘one to watch’ with all parties seemingly keen.

Inter are already making provisions for Dumfries exit. And they are reportedly close to agreeing a £13.2m (€15m) deal with Club Brugge for Canadian star Tajon Buchanan.

The 24-year-old has one goal and four assists so far this season. And he’s seen by Inter chief Beppe Marota as an ideal successor to Dumfries at wing-back.
