Man Utd to torpedo Tottenham plan by signing Prem ace who’ll oust unwelcome star for good

Brentford pair David Raya and Ivan Toney

Man Utd are sizing up a Brentford standout whose arrival would scupper a succession plan at Tottenham and push an unwelcome star out of Old Trafford once and for all.

Multiple positions in Erik ten Hag’s squad are expected to be addressed over the summer. Signing a new centre-forward will hoover up most of the headlines, though additions at central midfield, right-back and between thr sticks could also be made.

Regarding the latter, David de Gea is expected to sign a new, long-term deal that’ll commit his future to the club. De Gea’s current contract will expire at season’s end, though the Athletic’s David Ornstein reported an extension is in the works.

However, Ten Hag is understood to be keen on signing a classy back-up and potentially a player who could double up as De Gea’s long-term successor.

On that front, few options would fit the bill better than Brentford’s David Raya.

The 27-year-old is expected to leave Brentford over the summer as the Bees look to cash in while they still can. Raya’s deal doesn’t expire until 2024, though he recently admitted he’s spurned two contract offers and is seemingly eyeing a move up the league.

Manager Thomas Frank has also gone on record to state it’ll be “difficult” to ignore sizeable summer offers given Raya’s stance.

Raya has also been linked with Tottenham who are in the market for a new starting stopper. Calls have begun to grow for Hugo Lloris to be axed with the Frenchman in the midst of a nightmare season.

However, per talksPORT, Man Utd may torpedo Spurs’ plans.

They report the Red Devils are monitoring Raya who are looking for stiff competition for De Gea.

The idea of Raya moving to Old Trafford was recently assessed by club legend Gary Neville. The former right-back gave his blessing to the potential signing of the Premier League-proven star.

“I think Raya would interest United in the summer,” he said on The Overlap.

“I went to watch Brentford on a Saturday a couple of weeks ago. I think he’s going to become available, he’s only got a year left. I think he could step up.”

Raya arrival to oust Henderson for good

In the event Raya were to join United, talkSPORT add Nottingham Forest loanee, Dean Henderson, would likely be ousted for good.

Henderson joined Steve Cooper’s side on a season-long loan last July. The 25-year-old has performed admirably at the City Ground, though is currently sidelined with a thigh injury.

Henderson made headlines last summer in an explosive interview with talkSPORT. Henderson explained why he was “fuming” at Man Utd after labelling the way he was treated by the club as “criminal”.

The fresh update from talkSPORT concludes Henderson is ‘unlikely to be welcomed back’ in lieu of the comments he made last year.

If Raya were signed and De Gea pens fresh terms, Man Utd would be free to explore a permanent sale.
