Man Utd receive Harry Maguire loan interest from Serie A trio after making threat to captain about staying

Harry Maguire has become of interest to three clubs in Serie A, according to a report, and appears open to moving there after a warning about his Man Utd future.

It has been a turbulent time for Maguire over the past couple of seasons at Man Utd. He is in the spotlight again for the role he played in their Europa League elimination by Sevilla. The defender took much of the blame for the first goal Man Utd conceded in the second leg.

Maguire was starting because of injuries to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. When they have been available, Erik ten Hag has usually preferred to play them at centre-back rather than his captain.

And soon, Maguire might become the subject of serious interest from other clubs ready to take him away from Old Trafford. In that regard, an update from 90min has put three Italian clubs in contention to sign him.

According to the report, there is interest in Maguire from Juventus, Inter and AC Milan. A move to Serie A is something that the England international would supposedly be open to.

In the most likely scenario, it would have to be a loan move. Man Utd would prefer to sell Maguire for a transfer fee, but at least by loaning him out they could get his wages off the books.

Consequently, they would be able to invest in a new centre-half who can support Varane and Martinez with more conviction.

And if Maguire doesn’t leave Man Utd, he may face some other consequences. Per the report, he might lose the club captaincy if he does stay, due to his declining importance to the squad.

Time for Harry Maguire to leave Man Utd

It might be in his best interests, then, to leave and regain more prominence elsewhere. He does have some suitors in the Premier League, who aren’t named in the report, but his representatives have a feeling that somewhere in Serie A might be a good next destination.

Maguire might only have to look at the man he effectively replaced at Man Utd – Chris Smalling – for evidence of how a move to Italy can spark a late-career renaissance.

Smalling made way after a lengthy spell with Man Utd to join Roma in 2019. Since his move to the Italian capital, he has become one of the best defenders in his league.

Hence, there would be an example for Maguire to follow if he was to tread a similar path to end up at Juventus or either of the Milan clubs.

Milan already have one English defender among their ranks. Fikayo Tomori has been a key player for them since joining from Chelsea, so much so that he may have caught Man Utd’s attention himself.

Inter, though, might have the greatest need for a new centre-back. After all, they are about to lose Milan Skriniar at the end of his contract and are working to avoid the same happening with Stefan de Vrij. Their third regular starter, Alessandro Bastoni, is also attracting interest from other clubs – again including Man Utd.

As for Juventus, it will be important to finally find a successor to Leonardo Bonucci at the back. Moreover, the recent removal of their 15-point deduction in Serie A has given them arguably the best chance of Champions League qualification out of Maguire’s three suitors.

Therefore, there could be some appealing options for Maguire to rebuild his career at the age of 30.
