Man Utd: Romano confirms Ten Hag striker priority with PSG transfer battle set to commence
Manchester United are on the hunt for a new striker and have identified Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund as their priority, according to reports.
The 20-year-old is one of the most in-demand youngsters in Europe and Erik ten Hag is determined to sign him this summer.
Man Utd enjoyed an excellent 2022-23 campaign, finishing in third place in the Premier League table and winning the League Cup.
However, it’s fair to say they were overly reliant on Marcus Rashford, who scored 30 goals across all competitions.
If Man Utd want to become consistent title challengers again, the England international could certainly do with another quality striker alongside him.
The Red Devil’s have been linked with several forwards this summer. For instance, Harry Kane is one player they have an interest in but it looks likely he will remain at Tottenham for at least another season.
Now, Ten Hag has switched his attention to Hojlund, who has bags of potential. Last season, the Denmark international scored nine goals in 34 Serie A appearances.
Reports suggest Atalanta will sell Hojlund for the right price this summer. But, as it stands, Man Utd are yet to make an opening offer for him.
Hojlund remains top Man Utd striker target
According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Hojlund remains Man Utd’s top striker target this summer. But, they have a more pressing issue to deal with at the moment.
“I’m told Rasmus Højlund remains on top of Manchester United list as new striker,” Romano said on Twitter.
“Personal terms, never an issue as he’s very keen on the move. Man United never sent any official bid yet — just talks on club/player side as priority is new GK.
“PSG have also enquired about Højlund.”
Indeed, as previously reported by TEAMtalk, Man Utd are leading the race for Hojlund. Although, he is also a target for Chelsea.
Now, it seems Paris Saint-Germain are set to join the race, with the French club in danger of losing Kylian Mbappe this summer.
With that in mind, Man Utd will have to move quickly to get a deal done for the Dane. Atalanta reportedly want £50m for Hojlund and the Red Devils are reportedly happy to match that fee.
As noted by Romano, though, Ten Hag’s current priority is signing a new goalkeeper after the departure of David de Gea.
Andre Onana is Man Utd’s primary keeper target and they are expected to finalise a deal ‘this week.’
So, it will be interesting to see if they make an opening offer for Hojlund once they have signed Onana.
