Man Utd scouts well aware of hugely promising striker already eliminated from World Cup, Fabrizio Romano confirms

Jonathan David of Canada and Yannick Carrasco of Belgium

Canadian striker Jonathan David is “well known” to Manchester United scouts, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed while explaining the state of play in terms of a potential transfer.

Man Utd will be in the market for a new striker in 2023 after allowing Cristiano Ronaldo to leave the club. They have only scored 20 goals from their first 14 matches of the 2022-23 Premier League. It is the lowest tally in that regard out of all the clubs currently occupying a top-seven place.

There have been glimpses of promise from Anthony Martial, but not on a consistent basis due to injury issues. Therefore, signing a centre-forward is very much on the agenda for Man Utd.

A number of players will be on their shortlist. For example, there have been rumours regarding Lille striker Jonathan David, whose Canada side have failed to make it beyond the group stage of the World Cup despite still having a game to play.

Soon, David’s focus will be back on his situation at club level. He has been with Lille since 2020, winning Ligue 1 in his debut season after joining from Belgian side Gent.

Despite Lille failing to retain their title, David outscored his 2020-21 tally of 13 the following season. Indeed, last term, he managed 19 goals in all competitions, from the same number of matches as the previous campaign (48).

His form this season has looked promising yet again. Up to the break for the World Cup, David scored nine goals from 15 appearances in Ligue 1.

Although he has failed to score for his country in Qatar, his record of 22 goals from 37 caps overall makes for good reading as well.

Therefore, it might make sense for Man Utd to be taking a look at David. Still only 22 years of age, he has the potential to get even better.

Man Utd scouts taking note of Jonathan David

And according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who counts himself as an admirer of David’s talent, Man Utd are aware of what the New York-born forward could be capable of.

Writing for Caught Offside, Romano said: “Jonathan David is a player I really rate, and I’ve said he could be a good option for Manchester United. He’s now being linked with the club, but how reliable is the story?

“It’s normal for top players to be linked with Man Utd, but at the moment there are no negotiations ongoing for David. He’s well known by United scouts of course but there are no talks ongoing at the moment.

“I’m sure he will continue to attract interest from many top clubs.”

David is under contract with Lille until 2025.
