Man Utd star ready to ditch Ten Hag and join forgotten Tottenham man at Champions League club
Man Utd ‘flop’ Wout Weghorst is in line to link up with a forgotten Tottenham star at a Champions League club regardless of whether Erik ten Hag offers him a lifeline, per reports.
The giant Dutchman, 30, has largely failed to ignite during his six-month loan spell with Manchester United.
Weghorst has just two goals and three assists to his name in 28 appearances across all competitions for United. He’s also been unusually deployed as a No 10 at times in a decision that infuriated club legend Rio Ferdinand.
The Daily Telegraph reported in early May Weghorst was hoping to earn a permanent move to Old Trafford. His loan deal from Besiktas does not contain an option to buy, meaning any move would have to be negotiated from scratch.
However, subsequent reports from the Netherlands and Football Insider claimed Man Utd have performed a U-turn on Weghorst’s future and will not pursue a permanent deal.
In any case, a fresh update from FI has detailed who Weghorst could join next. Per the outlet, the striker is being backed to return to the familiar climbs of Besiktas irrespective of whether Ten Hag extends the olive branch.
Such a move would see Weghorst link up with forgotten former Tottenham star Gedson Fernandes whose 18-month loan with Spurs was cut short six months early in 2021.
Besiktas also boast ex-Spurs duo Dele Alli and Georges-Kevin Nkoudou on their books. However, Nkoudou is out of contract at season’s end and Alli is only on loan. The latter has already returned to parent club Everton after seeing his season ended by injury.
FI state the Turkish giant are ‘plotting to re-sign’ Weghorst who they label a ‘flop’.
The Dutchman will initially return to parent club Burnley, though Clarets boss Vincent Kompany is expected to put Weghorst up for sale.
Once the greenlight is given, Besiktas will chance their arm a second time for a player who performed well during his prior loan stint.
Indeed, Weghorst bagged nine goals in 18 appearances while on loan at Besiktas in the first half of the campaign.
His goals have helped Besiktas to mount a charge for Champions League football, with the club currently outside of the qualification places in the Turkish Super Lig by goal difference alone.
Dutch journalist Valentijn Driessen has tipped Weghorst to be a roaring success if opting to return to the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven.
However, FI plus independent reports from Turkey have converged on the view a return to Besiktas is the likeliest outcome.
Whether that be via another loan spell or a permanent move remains to be seen.
