Man Utd transfer aborted after Ten Hag U-turn; new plan revealed

Man Utd manager Erik ten Hag

A Manchester United move potentially involving Sheffield United has fallen through thanks to Erik ten Hag, and the Dutchman’s new plan has been confirmed.

The Red Devils are gearing up for a busy end to the summer window, with action anticipated on both the incomings and outgoings fronts.

A new left-back to provide cover for injured pair Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia is wanted. Tottenham have granted Sergio Reguilon permission to undergo a medical with United and the Spaniard is fast emerging as the likeliest candidate to sign up.

Elsewhere, United still hope to get a deal for Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat over the line, though today’s update regards an aborted exit.

Winger Facundo Pellistri had long been expected to leave Old Trafford on loan. Ten Hag was previously steering the Uruguayan towards Dutch side Twente, while a move within the Premier League to Sheffield United was also explored.

However, according to the Athletic, Pellistri’s potential exit has been kicked into touch.

The outlet stated Ten Hag is behind the change of direction, with the United boss deciding to keep Pellistri among his first-team squad for the next four months at least.

Ten Hag has spoken with Pellistri and made the 21-year-old aware of his decision. The Athletic categorically state Pellistri ‘will stay at Manchester United in this transfer window’.

Over a dozen clubs reportedly registered interest, though all will now be denied to sign the livewire attacker until January at least.

Pellistri blocked from leaving, but more minutes promised

Pellistri has racked up just 18 minutes of action so far this season across two substitute appearances.

Nonetheless, Ten Hag reportedly plans to increase the winger’s game-time as the season wears on and especially once the club’s League Cup and Champions League campaigns commence.

Rubberstamping the fact Ten Hag sees potential in Pellistri, the Athletic concluded preliminary talks over a new and improved contract have also taken place.

Pellistri’s current deal expires in the summer of 2025, though United do hold an option for an extra 12 months.
