Man Utd transfer Newcastle are desperate to complete shocks Liverpool legend, with Ten Hag told he’s making fatal mistake
A Liverpool legend thinks a mooted Man Utd move involving Newcastle would be a calamitous error on Erik ten Hag’s behalf, though Fabrizio Romano has hinted the green light could come.
How big Man Utd can go in the summer transfer window may well depend on if the Glazers are bought out. In the event the unpopular Americans retain their grip on the club, the Telegraph are among many who’ve claimed United will need to sell well if they’re to afford the calibre of player they crave.
To that end, a trio signed for £153m have reportedly been put up for sale. Elsewhere, Victor Lindelof has teased a summer exit, while Scott McTominay’s demotion down the pecking order could prompt a sale.
The Scotland international – who scored both goals in his country’s remarkable 2-0 win over Spain on Tuesday night – is fifth-choice at best back at Old Trafford.
When all are fit, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are Ten Hag’s preferred midfield pairing. Next comes Bayern Munich loanee Marcel Sabitzer and Fred depending on whether Ten Hag wants a more attacking or defensive feel.
McTominay is bringing up the rear, and as such, speculation has begun to swirl he’ll be on the move at season’s end.
If United give the green light, McTominay may not have to move far down the table to find a new home.
Indeed, Newcastle and Eddie Howe in particular are known to be huge admirers of McTominay. The Magpies tried to sign the 26-year-old in January, though Man Utd refused to entertain a mid-season sale.

Newcastle will go back in for McTominay
“Manchester United rejected all January offers for Scott McTominay but this summer they will be discussed again,” transfer guru Fabrizio Romano recently told Caught Offside.
“Newcastle United and Eddie Howe really like McTominay.”
Two traits in particular are getting Howe hot and bothered when it comes to McTominay. The fact the Magpies look certain to have a testing European campaign added to their fixture list next season is emboldening them to splash the cash on established stars with bundles of experience this summer.
However, when running the rule over McTominay and talk of a Newcastle switch, Liverpool legend John Barnes was taken aback.
The former Reds and England winger stressed he cannot see any reason why Ten Hag would want to axe the Scot.
But if Man Utd do sever ties, Barnes is convinced Newcastle will be pulling off a transfer masterstroke.
“I think McTominay would be a good fit for Newcastle,” said Barnes (via the Manchester Evening News).
“He’s a good, strong central defensive midfielder. He’s young and British so he has an understanding of the Premier League.
“That’s if ten Hag is actually looking to move him on. It’s obviously speculation and I don’t see why ten Hag would want to move McTominay on as he’s young and British.
“He’s a great addition for the Manchester United squad so I would be surprised by that.
“But McTominay would be a good signing for Newcastle.”
