Man Utd transfer news: Four more to follow Bailly out as staggering finer details of Marseille deal surface

Man Utd centre-back Eric Bailly

Man Utd could complete a defensive clear-out before the September 1 deadline, while the eye-catching finer details of Marseille’s move for Eric Bailly have emerged.

Bailly is on course to join Ligue 1 side Marseille on a season-long loan. Marseille have a spot to fill left by William Saliba who they were unsuccessful in securing a second loan for.

That left the door ajar for Bailly and Igor Tudor’s side are on the cusp of finalising their move at some stage today.

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano reported personal terms have been agreed with Bailly set to join on a season-long with a conditional obligation to buy. The defender has already said his goodbyes in Manchester and will fly out to France on Wednesday to undertake a medical.

The clause in his deal is due to be triggered pending Marseille’s qualification for the Champions League next season. However, according to the Telegraph, there’s more to it than that.

They state Bailly also has to feature in an unspecified number of matches to trigger the option too. That all sounds rosy for Manchester United who have no place for Bailly back at Old Trafford.

Indeed, Lisandro Martinez’s arrival relegated Bailly down to fifth-choice centre-half at best. What’s more, the Telegraph add Marseille will cover 100 percent of Bailly’s salary during the loan.

However, there is a catch and it comes in the form of the figure the option is set at.

Man Utd facing huge loss on Bailly

It’s noted that should the terms of the conditional obligation be met, Marseille will pay Man Utd a measly £5.9m for Bailly’s permanent capture.

That is less than one fifth of the £30m they paid Villarreal in 2016. The number is even more surprising given Bailly is still only 28 years old.

Regardless, United do at least have an exit route booked for Bailly as they begin to trim the fat of their squad. And according to the Telegraph, Bailly won’t be alone in departing the defensive ranks.

Defensive clear-out could hit six

Alex Telles has already joined Sevilla on loan. Bailly’s move to Marseille will double the exits, though they could then triple to six.

Centre-back pair, Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe, are both up for sale.

Tuanzebe’s contract is due to expire next summer, making this window the perfect time to cash in. If he reaches January 1 still on United’s books, he’ll be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs.

Jones’ deal also expires in 2023, though United could trigger an extra 12 months if they wished.

Left-back Brandon Williams is another they’ll listen to offers for. Tyrell Malacia has impressed since arriving from Feyenoord and a hotly-contested battle for starts with Luke Shaw has begun.

Williams is the odd man out in that regard and United are open to severing ties.

The final name on the chopping block is Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The £50m right-back is a poor fit for Erik ten Hag’s system given his limitations while in possession.

Diogo Dalot is the undisputed No 1 right-back and Wan-Bissaka can go if a suitable offer is lodged.

The issue there is only Crystal Palace have emerged as a viable contender to sign him. What’s more, a loan would do little to help United in the short term, while the Eagles are unwilling to offer more than £10m for a permanent deal.

That would represent another huge loss on their initial outlay. United also need to sign a new right-back first before the 24-year-old can depart.

Borussia Dortmund’s Thomas Meunier is one target in that respect. Barcelona’s Sergino Dest is another.
