Man Utd transfers: £65m move ‘well under way’, with new signing to oust star who’s ‘not good enough’

Portugal and FC Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa

A £65m-rated Portugal international will be on the move this summer and a switch to Man Utd where he’ll oust an under-fire star is ‘well under way’ per reports.

The long-standing Roy Keane v David de Gea feud rolled on on Sunday. Keane has made no secret of his disdain for De Gea in the past and fired another shot at the Spanish veteran while working for ITV Sport.

De Gea could do nothing about the first of Ilkay Gundogan’s strikes that secured Man City the FA Cup. However, his second effort was weakly struck and some believe a goalkeeper with quicker feet would’ve got down to their right quicker than De Gea did and repelled Gundogan’s winner.

Keane is certainly of that opinion, telling ITV Sport after the match (via the MEN): “They need a new goalkeeper and world-class striker, I’m sick of saying it!

“De Gea’s not good enough, he is not going to be the one to take United back to winning trophies.”

De Gea, 32, is out of contract on June 30 and despite initial confidence on Man Utd’s end, a new deal is yet to be signed.

The club reportedly want De Gea to absorb a colossal pay-cut from his current £375,000-a-week salary. Clouding the issue further is Erik ten Hag’s recent comments in which he admitted that even if De Gea does pen fresh terms, he might not be the regular starter moving forward.

Asked if De Gea will stay at Old Trafford this summer, Ten Hag said (via the Manchester Evening News): “Yes, but I will not say he’ll always be my No 1 because in a club like Man Utd there must be competition in all positions.

“You can’t do it with 11 players. It is impossible. You need double positions.”

With Dean Henderson wanting out and Nottingham Forest preparing a permanent bid, Man Utd are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.

£65m goalkeeper on his way to Old Trafford?

All manner of names have been linked including Andre Onana and David Raya to name just two. However, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, it’s FC Porto’s Diogo Costa who’ll be making his way to Old Trafford.

The Portugal international, 23, signed a new contract with Porto back in November. However, that was simply a case of Porto protecting their investment and they were also able to raise Costa’s release clause to €75m (approx. £65m).

A Bola categorically state Costa ‘will leave Porto in the summer transfer window’ and his exit will ramp up after the Portuguese cup final on Saturday evening. Porto square off against Braga at 5:15pm UK time.

The article claims a move to Man Utd is ‘well underway’ and rival interest from Chelsea and Newcastle is expected to be fended off.

Whether United are prepared to pay the release clause or thunder in with a lower bid remains to be seen. However, the fact there is a release clause at least lets United know where they stand and an end goal – albeit an expensive one – is in sight.

In the event Costa does wind up at Old Trafford, Roy Keane would be destined to get his wish of seeing the back of De Gea sooner rather than later. Indeed, £65m signings are not made to warm the bench.
