Man Utd transfers: Ten Hag refuses to dismiss Neymar speculation with cryptic update as blockbuster deal waits in limbo

Paris - Neymar Jr during the match between Paris Saint Germain (PSG) and LOSC (Lille) at the Parc des Princes on 19 February 2023.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag hasn’t ruled out the possibility of signing Neymar after he was asked about the Brazilian star.

With PSG looking to overhaul their squad this summer, Neymar appears to be seeking his next club.

Getting him out of PSG on a permanent basis might be tricky though. He is one of the highest earners in Europe and is under contract until at least 2025.

With this being the case, a potential loan move has been rumoured. Man Utd were linked with the 31-year-old earlier this week.

Although PSG would ideally like to sell him on a permanent basis, a loan move might be the most realistic option right now.

Ten Hag was asked about the speculation and he kept his cards close to his chest. “When we have news we will tell you,” smiled Ten Hag via Daily Mail.

Man Utd’s primary target for this summer will be to sign a striker, but the opportunity to sign Neymar might be too good to past up on.

There’s no doubt that Ten Hag has done a fine job so far, but his side are in need of another creative spark. In the Premier League, they have only scored 52 goals, which is the fewest of any top six side.

Marcus Rashford has often delivered the goods this year, but United could do with another outlet to score and create goals.

Would Neymar be a good fit under Ten Hag?

Ten Hag’s first job at Old Trafford was to sort out the dressing room. Towards the end of Ralf Rangnick’s reign, there was a toxic atmosphere which needed to be fixed.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure seemed inevitable in the end and Ten Hag will be wary over what impact a superstar like Neymar could have behind the scenes.

From a footballing perspective, there’s no debating Neymar’s ability. While he may no longer be at the peak of his powers, he still ranks as one of the best players in the world.

Prior to the World Cup, he had been in sparkling form for PSG. In just 20 Ligue 1 matches this season, he has scored 13 goals and provided 11 assists.

Teams interested in Neymar will also be wary of his injury record though. The 31-year-old is currently on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Throughout his six years at PSG, the Brazilian has never made more than 22 appearances in the league. Ten Hag will be debating this deal, but other transfers could take priority.

Landing a striker remains to be their biggest task of the window. Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marcus Thuram has recently emerged as a target.

The forward is out of contract in the summer and would be a cheaper alternative to that of Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen.

Man Utd are also keen to add to their ranks in defence and midfield, but a striker will be the first thing on the agenda this summer.
