Man Utd tried for Madrid double upon signing Casemiro and can complete world class signing if one thing happens

Real Madrid stars Toni Kroos and Rodrygo battling Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann

Man Utd attempted to bring a world class attacker over from Madrid when signing Casemiro last summer, and a report has detailed the only way in which they can complete their unfinished business.

The Red Devils ultimately moved for Casemiro after a series of stinging disappointments in the transfer market. Their long pursuit of Frenkie de Jong ultimately ended in failure and only at that stage did they ramp up other midfield moves.

Adrien Rabiot of Juventus came into focus, but the player’s – and his mother’s – sky high salary demands price the Frenchman out of a move.

Attention then turned to Casemiro and given how brilliant the Brazilian has been, United fans will be glad to have scooped what was the club’s third-choice target.

However, according to Sky Sports, Casemiro wasn’t the only high profile player discussed when United officials flew to Madrid.

Their reporter, Melissa Reddy, has revealed Man Utd ‘sought dialogue’ with Antoine Griezmann and his agent while in Spain.

The idea was to ‘gauge the possibility of signing the France international’, though the player only had eyes for Atletico.

Griezmann, 31, was on loan at Atletico from Barcelona at the time. The deal contained an obligation to buy worth £35.2m that would be activated if Griezmann played more than 45 minutes in 80 percent of available matches while there, per the Daily Mail.

Cash-strapped Atletico circumvented the clause by opting to regularly start Griezmann on the bench and only bring him on in the second half.

However, his performances were of such a high standard that they eventually signed Griezmann outright in October anyway.

Griezmann since went on to dazzle for France in Qatar in an unfamiliar deeper role in midfield. Since returning to club football with Atletico, he’s once again been a shining light further up field.

Man Utd could complete Griezmann raid if one thing happens

Reddy added Griezmann was ‘flattered’ by United’s interest, and outlined one situation in which Erik ten Hag could complete his unfinished business.

The Sky reporter noted ‘enquiries from England’ have not stopped and only if Diego Simone were to leave would Griezmann consider an exit.

Simeone has achieved legendary status at Atletico having guided them to two LaLiga titles while in charge. He’s also firmly established the club alongside Real Madrid and Barcelona to make Spain’s big two a big three.

However, Atletico failed to make it out of the group stages of this season’s Champions League and are far from assured of finishing inside the top four in LaLiga. They reside in fourth at present, though only by way of goal difference.

Sections of the club’s ultras have begun to call for change and for the first time in Simeone’s tenure, he’s feeling the heat.

In the event Simeone does depart for pastures new at some point in the near future, Man Utd will have a small opening for Griezmann.
