Manchester United are reportedly set to meet the exit clause to sign Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou as doubts over long-term No 1 David De Gea resurface.
The 30-year-old has, alongside Thibaut Courtois, proved the outstanding goalkeeper in LaLiga this season. Indeed, the Moroccan has played 33 times this season and has been a major factor in Sevilla’s placing of second in the table. And while they have not quite managed to dampen Real Madrid’s seemingly-unopposed march to the title, Bounou has caught the eye.
Indeed, the Daily Mirror reports that Manchester United have been keeping a close watch on his performances this season. Indeed, the keeper – known simply as Bono – has been earmarked by scouts as a future signing for quite some time.
They state United officials have asked Sevilla to be kept abreast of his situation with his deal at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium expiring in summer 2024.
Furthermore, the paper claims the £25m exit clause in his contract gives United a solid chance of his signing this summer.
Sevilla chiefs are well aware of United’s interests and are trying to persuade the Montreal-born shot-stopper to sign a new deal. They want to extend his stay in Andalucia by a further two years, handing him a hefty pay hike in the process.
Furthermore, they also hope to raise his exit clause to a far-more hefty £63m.
United are not the only club pursuing Bno either. The report states Atletico Madrid are also looking at him, while he has admirers in Serie A too.
Bounou tipped to replace De Gea
But it is the Red Devils whose interest is perhaps the strongest.
Their long-serving No 1 De Gea has just over 15 months left on his deal at Old Trafford. As such, there is growing speculation that United could look to cash in on him this summer.
De Gea has been with United since summer 2011 and is closing in on 500 appearances for the club.
He recently stated his happiness at Old Trafford and apparent willingness to sign a new deal.
He said: “I like the fact I was born in Madrid, but at the end of the day, it’s just a city. Now I feel as if I’m from Manchester; I just feel like anyone else from Manchester.
Manchester United scouting Leeds' Illan Mesiler
Manchester United sent scouts to watch Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier who’s viewed as a potential long term replacement for David de Gea.
“Where you are loved and welcomed is your home. I’ve been here for many years and, obviously, anything can happen in life, in the world of football. But honestly, I don’t see myself away from Manchester United.”
Luis Enrique explains De Gea Spain axe
Despite a solid season for United, a sign that De Gea’s star is on the wane came after his recent axing from the Spain squad.
Having won 45 caps for his country, De Gea has been part of La Roja’s squad since 2014.
However, he was recently omitted from Luis Enrique’s latest international squad.
With Unai Simon the No 1, he is backed up by Brighton’s Robert Sanchez and Brentford’s David Raya. The latter earns a first international call-up.
And the Spain coach suggests De Gea no longer suits his style of play.
“It is part of the tracing we do with the goalkeepers,” Enrique said, in relation to Raya’s first call-up.
“He is a player who is doing very well. I really want to see it in the context of the selection. He has the necessary profile to play with us.”
