Marcus Rashford admits Man Utd embarrassment and urges Ten Hag to make Ronaldo U-turn

Marcus Rashford has admitted that Manchester United’s defeat to Manchester City was “embarrassing”, adding that Cristiano Ronaldo can help turn their situation around.

The Red Devils suffered a tough start to the campaign, losing to Brighton and Brentford. Although, a statement 2-1 win over Liverpool sparked a turnaround and a four-match winning streak.

Nevertheless, Man City brought their rivals back down to Earth with a 6-3 win over their derby rivals.

Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both scored hat-tricks at the Etihad Stadium, with a second-half double from Anthony Martial acting as Man Utd consolation.

England World Cup hopeful Rashford has been a bright spark for the Red Devils. And he feels manager Erik ten Hag has shown enough to warrant progress in the early part of his tenure.

“It was a bit embarrassing after the [Man City] game,” Rashford told the Daily Mirror. “But these results can happen in football and the only way to come back is to win your next game.

“The new manager has got a very clear identity and a way of playing. I think it makes it easier to adapt to him. I felt this in pre-season.

“He got his messages across quickly and directly and the players took those messages on board.

“It is still early days, but the more we get to know him, the better we will become and the more he gets to know us as well. I’m just looking forward to winning games.”

Rashford backs Ronaldo for Man Utd

While Rashford has starred for Man Utd in the early parts of the season, the same cannot be said for Ronaldo.

The 37-year-old wanted to leave Old Trafford this summer, but after failing to sort a move, he is down Ten Hag’s pecking order.

Indeed, Ten Hag brought on Martial instead of Ronaldo in the Manchester derby. Jadon Sancho is a regular Man Utd starter alongside Rashford, with £84million summer signing Antony also in the team.

However, Rashford has backed Ronaldo to make his mark and become a vital team member for Ten Hag.

“Ronaldo is an unbelievable player – and he’s been an unbelievable player ever since I watched him as a youngster,” the 24-year-old added.

“It is a joy to play with him. We can keep building and when he starts scoring goals, he won’t stop.

“We just have to try and keep putting the ball in positions when he’s in front of goal. After a game like that [Man City], it doesn’t matter who you play or where you play, it is just important to win.

“But we will have to be a lot better on the ball and show a much higher intensity at Everton.”

United man needs to keep starring

As much as Rashford wants Ronaldo in and around the Man Utd team, he must know more game time for the Portuguese would come at a cost to his own game time.

Rashford is playing as more of a striker under Ten Hag and is producing his best football. Indeed, he has often been deployed out wide under previous managers.

But if Ronaldo came back into the team, he would surely decrease Rashford’s minutes in the process. That is something the England international would not want as he tries to get back into Gareth Southgate’s plans for the World Cup.

Rashford just has to keep playing his own game and hope Ronaldo proves himself with goals elsewhere. Ultimately, it is very healthy competition for Rashford to have a player closing in on 800 career goals battling alongside him.
