Mason Greenwood breaks silence on Getafe loan deal as Man Utd man lays out next steps
Mason Greenwood has spoken for the first time since joining Getafe on loan as the Manchester United forward has laid out his next steps.
After the decision was taken that Greenwood would not continue with Man Utd, several clubs from around Europe expressed an interest in the forward.
The likes of Lazio and Besiktas were among the clubs interested, but in the end, it was La Liga outfit Getafe who snapped up the 21-year-old on a season-long loan deal.
Greenwood was facing charges relating to attempted rape and assault but it was announced in February that the case against him has been discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service.
This decision was made after it was ruled that “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction”.
Greenwood was also subject to an internal investigation at Old Trafford and the club ultimately decided that Greenwood should look to rebuild his career elsewhere.
The forward has spoken for the first time since joining Getafe and has laid out his ambitions for the season.
“I am very happy to be here,” Greenwood said during his unveiling. “I have been training for four or five months, I am getting up to speed and have been training with my team-mates and feel quite good.
“We take it one game at a time and the next home game is coming in a few weeks and we will try to win and do our best.”
Getafe manager makes stance clear
Several clubs quickly distanced themselves from a potential deal for Greenwood due to the backlash they would likely receive.
Getafe manager Jose Bordalas addressed the media on Saturday, following his side’s 2-1 loss against Real Madrid.
“It is too delicate a situation to trivialise this issue,” Bordalas said. “Everybody knows what happened, the appropriate measures were taken.
“Obviously we can only talk about football, about other issues, I think, that the people and the relevant systems did what they had to do, and everybody knows how it ended – without a condemnatory sentence.
“He’s a footballer of the highest level, who comes to Getafe with enormous hope. We are going to help him to recover his best level.”
While Man Utd have taken the decision to cut ties with Greenwood for the season, he will return to the club at the end of his loan deal with Getafe.
The 21-year-old is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025 and the Red Devils have slightly left the door open for his return in the future by not selling him on a permanent basis.
