Manchester United are said to have held positive talks behind the scenes with one of their main sponsors about the impact of reintegrating Mason Greenwood, a report has claimed.

Greenwood has been suspended by Man Utd since criminal allegations were made against him in January 2022. Although the charges have since been dropped, the club have not rushed into a decision about whether to bring him back into the fold.

There have been suggestions that Man Utd could loan him out in order to buy themselves more time in terms of deciding his future, although the plans may have since changed.

Alternative solutions would be to sell him, release him from his contract, or – in the option that would cause the most debate – reintegrate him into their squad.

And according to The Sun, Man Utd are holding ‘secret talks’ with their kit suppliers Adidas to gather their stance on a return for Greenwood.

Those talks are said to have been ‘positive’ and there is a theory that other sponsors could ‘follow suit’.

However, a spokesperson for Adidas said: “That’s a question for the club. As sponsors we have no influence over team line-ups.”

Man Utd did not comment when approached by The Sun about the story.

Source suggests Adidas ‘not fiercely opposed’ to Greenwood return

The tabloid’s source had told them: “The initial signals from Adidas are positive.

“Without their blessing it would be hard to see a way back. But they have communicated his return would not necessarily be an insurmountable obstacle.

“They have certainly given the impression they would not be fiercely opposed to it.

“No decision has been made yet but every option is being explored. It’s an unpredictable situation and public opinion will play a part.

“It won’t be easy if he does return but sponsors won’t necessarily walk out of the door overnight.

“He trains alone but the club is keeping in touch. He wants to stay.”

According to the report, Man Utd will make their decision about Greenwood within a matter of weeks. He has recently been training separately with their blessing.

Prior to his suspension, the forward scored 35 goals from 129 appearances for the club after graduating from their academy.
