Manchester United could yet bring Mason Greenwood back to Old Trafford in the January window after details of a surprise exit clause in his Getafe loan deal emerged.

The 21-year-old forward has joined the LaLiga side on a season’s loan as he bids to get his career back on track. The United forward has not played since January 2022 following his arrest for attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault. And while those charges were since dropped by the Crown Prosectution Service, his hopes of relaunching his career with Manchester United seemingly look bleak.

Indeed, the Red Devils apparent plan to integrate Greenwood back into their first-team squad was met with widespread criticism with Football365 leading that by claiming the club would degrade themselves by allowing Greenwood to return.

As as a result, it was no surprise to see Greenwood ultimately being allowed to resume his career abroad with a late scramble for his services ensuing in the last 48 hours of the transfer window.

With Premier League clubs ‘scared off’ Greenwood’s signing, it came down to three overseas clubs chasing his signature with Besiktas, Lazio and Getafe all in the mix.

Ultimately, it was a move to the Madrid suburbs that won the day, with the signing of the once-capped England man sparking jubiliant celebrations at the LaLiga side. However, Serie A giants Lazio were far from happy at missing out with their president Claudio Lotito pointing a finger of blame over their failure to get the deal over the line.

Now the player will use the forthcoming international break to step up his fitness regime.

Mason Greenwood could be back at Man Utd in January

And if Greenwood can prove himself to Getafe coach Jose Bordalas, he could be in line to make his debut for the club in their next LaLiga fixture against Osasuna on Sunday 17 September.

However, it seems that, while Greenwood has joined Getafe on a season-long loan, there remains a chance he could be recalled by United in the January window.

And while United have made it clear they do not expect Greenwood to play for them again, The Athletic claims a return to United remains an option in January.

Per the report, United could trigger an option to recall Greenwood if the parties are unhappy with how the move has developed. As it stands, United are happy at this stage to see how the loan pans out, though will monitor his progress closely given he remains under contract with the club until summer 2025.

Indeed, United hope Greenwood uses the loan to get his career back on track and have offered their ongoing support to him while he adjusts to life in Spain.

As such, he is still viewed by the by club, in the crudest of terms, as a valuable asset. At his peak, and before his arrest, Greenwood would have fetched £40m to £50m in the modern market.

Now, The Athletic claims there is a ‘possibility’ that United could offer Greenwood a new deal to extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond 2025 and to protect his valuation.

The club knows that a good season in Spain could yet rekindle interest in acquiring Greenwood’s services again on a permanent basis. But their chances of achieving a good fee for him would reduce dramatically if he were to enter the final 12 months of his deal.

The Bradford-born forward’s £75,000 a week deal remains covered in the main by United under the terms of the loan arrangement with Getafe.
