Mason Mount: Man Utd medical underway as incredible wage increase after Chelsea exit revealed

Mason Mount Manchester United target

Man Utd are all set to make Mason Mount their first signing of the summer after the midfielder began his medical at Carrington on Monday.

Late last week, an agreement was struck between Man Utd and Chelsea for Mount to change clubs. He was approaching the final year of his contract with Chelsea, so Man Utd made him their top target to strengthen in midfield.

Mount quickly reciprocated that interest by choosing Man Utd as his preferred next destination. And since the two clubs found a compromise about his transfer value, the England international has been waiting to finalise the move.

The final hurdle is about to be cleared on Monday after various reports indicated that Mount has begun his medical checks at Man Utd’s Carrington complex.

Should he come through the tests unscathed, he will be able to put pen to paper on the lucrative contract that is awaiting him.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Mount’s contract at Man Utd will last until June 2028, with the option of a further year. It should cover most of his prime years.

And the Evening Standard has confirmed how much better off Mount will be financially because of it. Indeed, while he has been earning around £80,000 per week from Chelsea, he is set to take home £250,000 per week from Man Utd.

Bonuses could increase his earnings closer to the £300,000-per-week mark, the report adds. In contrast, Chelsea’s best offer to extend Mount’s stay there was at £200,000 per week.

Behind his decision to reject Chelsea was the length of the contract on offer and an issue with image rights.

Man Utd might announce Mason Mount this week

Therefore, a new challenge now awaits Mount in Manchester. They may even be able to announce his arrival this week.

After adding Mount to their squad, other areas Man Utd are likely to focus on in the transfer window include the goalkeeper and centre-forward positions, as well as potentially at centre-back.

Meanwhile, Chelsea will have to replenish their own midfield after already sanctioning the departures of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz and Ruben Loftus-Cheek. They have joined Al Ittihad, Manchester City, Arsenal and AC Milan respectively.

Player sales have been important for Chelsea due to the bloated size of their squad last summer and how it became hard for Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter or Frank Lampard to manage.

The loss of a talented academy graduate like Mount, while a necessary step due to his contract situation, will undoubtedly be one of the most hurtful.

At Man Utd, the 24-year-old would join a midfield department that already includes Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Scott McTominay, Fred, Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes.

Some of those players will now be facing uncertain futures themselves if they want to get regular gametime, since a £60m investment like Mount will have a big part in Erik ten Hag’s plans.
