Mass change expected in one Man Utd position as top scout eyes bargain fix

Man Utd could see up to three changes in personnel in the goalkeeping department this summer, and a report has revealed who’s being eyed on the additions end.

The two constants in United’s goalkeeping ranks this summer will be David de Gea and Tom Heaton. De Gea had previously faced stiff competition from current No 2 Dean Henderson. However, after producing some of the best form of his career this season, the Spaniard is now once again the undisputed first choice.

That will likely leave Henderson searching for a new club at season’s end, either by the loan or permanent exit route.

Indeed, Henderson reportedly pushed for a loan exit in January as his chances of making England World Cup squad later this year slip away. In Gareth Southgate’s latest squad, Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope were the three stoppers chosen.

Given Henderson’s past performances, there will be no shortage of suitors. And given reliable third-choice Tom Heaton has another year left on his deal, Henderson could be allowed to walk. The club also hold an option to extend Heaton’s deal until 2024.

Fourth choice stopper Lee Grant is also on the books. However, the 39-year-old will be a free agent in the summer and per the Sun, is expected to depart.

That will leave just two senior stoppers to choose from. A club of United’s size will not risk entering a season with a shortage of options in such a critical position. As such, the Sun detail two keepers on United’s radar.

Benjamin Siegrist and Sam Johnstone eyed

Firstly, it’s claimed their preferred choice to take Henderson’s place is Sam Johnstone.

The 28-year-old West Brom star is a man in demand given he will be a free agent this summer. He has also been linked with Chelsea, though their off-field turmoil may remove them from the equation.

However, if United fail to bring Johnstone on board, the Sun state Dundee Utd stopper Benjamin Siegrist is catching their eye.

The Swiss, 30, is well known to United’s goalkeeping coach Tony Coton through their shared time at Aston Villa. Like Johnstone, Siegrist won’t cost a fee with his contract in Scotland expiring at season’s end.

Coton reportedly was in attendance to watch Siegrist when Dundee Utd faced Celtic on Monday, March 14.

A rather more high profile option was recently detailed by the Mirror. Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was mentioned amid talk of a £25m release clause. However, he would likely only be signed if De Gea were to leave, and that appears extremely unlikely at present.

A more realistic prospect appears to be Grant and Henderson taking their leave, with the pair replaced by the addition of either Johnstone or Siegrist. Given neither would cost a fee, it would also allow United to focus their summer transfer spending elsewhere.
