Mauricio Pochettino to Man Utd takes another step forward as twist of fate leaves Glazers quids in

Mauricio Pochettino, Old Trafford

Manchester United are ‘increasingly confident’ of appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager – and they seemingly won’t have to pay a penny to land their man.

The 49-year-old has been in charge of PSG since January 2021. The Parisians are currently 11 points clear at the top of the Ligue 1 standings and likely to re-claim the title. Having replaced Thomas Tuchel in the Parc des Princes dugout, though, the Argentine was unable to land the French top-flight crown last season.

They finished behind surprise champions Lille but did manage to lift the Coupe de France trophy on May 19. Pochettino has been at PSG for just over a year, though it’s never had that feeling of a lasting relationship.

Indeed, links to the United hotseat have been mooted for quite a few seasons now. Unfortunately, the timing though has never been quite right, with Pochettino firstly at Tottenham, and then when he was free, United settling on Ole Gunnar Solksjaer.

This summer, however, may finally see United land their man.

That’s after reports on Tuesday suggested Pochettino will leave Paris at the end of the season. That is irrespective of how they fare in in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

However, should they fail to beat Real Madrid in their last-16 tie, reports in France claim Pochettino could be jettisoned before the season ends.

No compensation cost for Pochettino

As such, the Daily Mail claims United officials are keeping a close watch on the situation in Paris.

They claim United officials are now ‘increasingly confident’ of having Pochettino in the dug out next season.

His prospective sacking will also be music to the ears of United’s owners, the Glazers.

With Pochettino currently having 18 months left on his deal, they were facing a hefty compensation bill to prise him away.

But his sacking in Paris looks likely to absolve them of any such payment – a potential saving of up to £15m.

Man Utd fans ‘prefer Erik Ten Hag’

Meanwhile, multiple United fans have reacted with dismay to reports suggesting their path towards Pochettino is clearing.

Indeed, with Erik Ten Hag also under consideration, some have taken to Twitter to express their preference for the Ajax coach.

One United fan wrote on Twitter: ‘I really hope it’s not Poch, man. Ten Hag has done brilliantly with that young Ajax squad. Imagine what he can do with Uniteds’ youngsters.’

Another commented: ‘After everything the last manager put us through the fans deserve the best manager available. Imo that’s not Poch. I think most fans want Ten Hag, I do anyway.’

‘Taking Poch and letting Ten Hag replace Pep [Guardiola] at [Manchester] City will be another big wrong decision by Man Utd,’ a third insisted.

A fourth pleaded with the club: ‘I’m begging Man United. Please no Poch, get me Erik Ten hag’.

While one came to this brutal conclusion: ‘If we dare appoint Poch over Ten Hag I will give up on this football club. It’ll be the final nail in the “Manchester United have no ambition to ever win anything ever again” coffin’.
