Maverick Man Utd striker signing idea falters as CEO hints at effect of ‘excellent’ work to force Ten Hag rethink

Manchester United have been linked with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting in recent weeks, but Bayern Munich have now begun exploring a contract renewal for the striker.

Choupo-Moting has followed an intriguing career path up to this stage of his career. After a five-goal season with Stoke City in 2017-18, which culminated in relegation from the Premier League, he has gone on to represent two of Europe’s most powerful clubs.

First came a two-season spell with French giants Paris Saint-Germain, for whom he scored nine goals from 51 games. Then, in 2020, he returned to his country of birth, Germany, with Bayern Munich.

Choupo-Moting scored nine goals in all competitions in each of his first two seasons with Bayern. He has already surpassed that tally this term, with 11 goals from 16 games.

Having shaken off his Stoke form, the Cameroon international has been earning fresh admiration. There have been several reports in November about Man Utd showing an interest in him.

Erik ten Hag’s side are on the lookout for attacking reinforcements after the release of Cristiano Ronaldo, who appears to be bound for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.

However, they might only be able to find short-term signings in January. Hence, someone like the 33-year-old Choupo-Moting could be on their radar.

His contract with Bayern Munich is only due to last until the end of the season. Therefore, he could be an affordable target during the winter.

That said, Choupo-Moting has already spoken of his focus on Bayern Munich and how he can visualise representing them for longer.

Furthermore, the Bundesliga champions’ sporting director, Hasan Salihamidzic, has recently said they would “love” to keep the former Schalke star.

Bayern Munich CEO confirms Choupo-Moting plan

Now, Bayern Munich’s CEO, Oliver Kahn, has reinforced their stance.

He told Sky Sport Deutschland reporter Florian Plettenberg: “We can say that Choupo is now doing an excellent job.

“We’ll sit down after the World Cup. We’ll see how we can come together.”

Choupo-Moting has been representing Cameroon in Qatar. He started their loss to Switzerland and draw with Serbia, scoring in the most recent outing.

The African nation would have to beat Brazil and hope the other match between the two European sides in their group goes their way to progress to the knockout stage, which appears unlikely.

Hence, Choupo-Moting may be ready to report back to his club fairly soon. It will allow them the chance to negotiate the terms of a potential new deal.

Should the centre-forward sign up, as he seems willing to, Man Utd will have to shelve the idea of signing him. Given his age, it appears one they would be unlikely to come back to further down the line.
