Man Utd midfielder transfer: Ten Hag rejects chance to sign Chelsea flop amid approach for Premier League alternative
A Sky Sports journalist has revealed Manchester United were offered the chance to sign a disappointing former Chelsea midfielder, but Erik ten Hag opted against bringing him in.
Man Utd need a new midfielder following Christian Eriksen’s injury. The playmaker was fouled by Andy Carroll during the 3-1 win over Reading in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Man Utd released a statement detailing the extent of Eriksen’s issue. It read: ‘While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May.
‘The 30-year-old’s absence will be a big disappointment to manager Erik ten Hag and fans, given the consistency of his performances throughout the season so far, making 31 appearances since arriving at Old Trafford.
‘However, there is hope that Christian can return in time to play a role in the final stages of the campaign. We all wish Christian the best of luck for a speedy recovery.’
Man Utd were not expected to sign a new midfielder on transfer deadline day, but Eriksen’s absence has forced them into action. They have previously been linked with Benfica and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez, but he is close to joining Chelsea in a Premier League record £105million transfer.
Instead, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth claims Man Utd were given the opportunity to capture Saul Niguez from Atletico Madrid as Eriksen’s short-term replacement.
But following his poor spell on loan at Chelsea last season, Ten Hag turned down this potential move.
Man Utd choose Bundesliga ace over Leicester man
Sheth also spoke about a Premier League alternative in the form of Leicester’s Youri Tielemans. He said: “I’m told Youri Tielemans was being discussed but the fee from Leicester was likely to be too large even though he has six months left of his contract.
“So a couple of names there that United were offered, whereas United are interested in [Marcelo] Sabitzer.”
As Sheth explains, Man Utd appear set to bring in Sabitzer rather than Saul or Tielemans. They have reportedly agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for the 28-year-old. However, there are conflicting reports about whether it is a straight loan or if it includes an option for Man Utd to buy at the end of the season.
Sabitzer is currently travelling from Munich to Manchester. He wants the move to go through before the 11pm deadline.
