Nemanja Matic explains why Hannibal Mejbri can have big Man Utd future – ‘he surprises me’

Hannibal Mejbri before a Manchester United match

Nemanja Matic has named Hannibal Mejbri as one Manchester United player he will be keeping a close eye on after he leaves the club.

Matic recently announced his upcoming exit from Manchester United. This season, which has been his fifth at Old Trafford, will be his last there. The midfielder will then continue his career elsewhere, most likely abroad.

In turn, other players will have to fill the voids left at Manchester United by the likes of Matic and Paul Pogba, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag will likely have his eyes on some potential signings. But another solution could come from the youth ranks, where Hannibal has been impressing.

The Tunisia international featured in 10 Premier League 2 games for United’s under-23s this season. He also played once for the senior side in the Premier League.

On that outing, in a defeat to Liverpool, he earned a booking from his six-minute cameo. It was not his finest moment, and he has only been in one matchday squad since.

But teammate Matic is of the belief that the 19-year-old can have a bigger and better impact in the years to come.

“I have to say that Hannibal is a fantastic player [and a] great character,” Matic told Manchester United’s official website.

“The talent he has, he needs to use that. I really want to see him in the future and how he will grow.”

Hannibal Mejbri deserving of more Man Utd minutes

Mejbri has just two senior appearances for United to his name so far. Contracted to the club until 2026, though, there could be more to come.

“I hope so [to see him get more minutes],” Matic continued.

“I think that every time I see him in training, he surprises me with his quality. He’s still young, but I’m very excited.

“I really want to see how he’s growing and improving.”

Man Utd’s season concludes away at Crystal Palace on Sunday. If Matic is involved, it would be his last appearance for the club. Beyond then, Mejbri may be one of the players to step into his territory.
